“One of the 5 standout shows in NY [2018]” - The New York Times "...a cathartic musical journey....wrapped in a collectively told and engaging story.... It took Fort and her trio twenty years to get to this magical place of trust and forbearance. From where I’m sitting, it was well worth the wait.” - Sam Newsome, Saxophonist [“[Colour” liner notes] http://www.anatfort.com/ For Anat Fort, improvisation is a way of living; whether playing, composing or teaching her work is always inspired by the moment. A natural, life-long improviser, she discovered the depth of jazz in her teens. Coming to the US to study with Harold Mabern, Rufus Reid and Paul Bley, Anat developed the writing aspect of her creativity through the study of classical and jazz composition. In December 2018 she received the prestigious Prime Minister Jazz Composers Award [Israel]; the first woman to ever win this prize. The Limp: https://youtu.be/6PP2XTvQN7U
Sunday 9:00 pm to 10:30 pm | Rachel Marie Singer-Songwriter, Folk/Traditional, and Americana | Hootenanny Cafe Mini Concerts Online: www.wtbq.com or 93.5FM, NY See Map |
Rachel Marie follows in a tradition of unapologetically forthright women folksingers, with songs that hearken to "overstuffed lines of Tori Amos, philosophical turn of Indigo Girls, and lilting vocals like Joni Mitchell." The social awareness of folk meets the introspection of the singer-songwriter tradition with a moderate dose of snark. Rachel takes a straightforward and honest approach to songwriting in an effort to foster genuine human connection and encourage empathy through music. Passion for using the power of her voice to shed light on injustice gives rise to poignant poetic statements on subjects from heartbreak and death to police brutality and immigration. An endearingly quirky stage presence as honest as her songs keeps audiences charmed. Boston-based and Pennsylvania-raised, Rachel has played at prestigious folk venues including the me&thee, Club Passim, and Godfrey Daniels. Rachel's latest full-length album, False Foundations, was released in May 2018.
