With the African performance group Sankofa, percussionist and bassist Juma Sultan is a link between free jazz and Jimi Hendrix - a puzzle piece in the history of musicians’ cooperatives. http://www.jumasultan.net/ Percussionist Juma Sultan shot to international fame when he stepped onto to stage of the 1969 Woodstock Festival as a member of Jimi Hendrix’s Gypsy Sun & Rainbows. However, his musical journey neither starts nor ends there. With the multi-instrumentalist Ali Abuwi he helped form the Aboriginal Music Society, a loose assembly of players who prided themselves on absolute inclusiveness (“Any Song, Any Key, Anywhere,” was their motto.) Hendrix dropped by to play with him in 1969, a few days before the Woodstock festival, resulting in a much-bootlegged jam session. Juma's albums with the Aboriginal Music Society include Whispers from the Archives and Father of Origin. The Land: https://youtu.be/A2ZDvrnNPXY | ||
