His Mom was a blues singer. His Dad played jazz guitar. By age 17, Armstrong was touring the country, and by his 20s, became the youngest member of Smokey Wilson's band. In the 1980s, James was a founding member of the band Mama Roo and received his first recording contract for Crescendo Records.

Events surrounding a home invasion left Armstrong without the use of his left hand and arm, and threatened to end his career forever. In the tragedy he gained in “a whole new respect for the music itself, the power in slow blues, how the silences between the notes are as important as the notes.”

Blues Been Good to Me (2017) is his latest release on CatFood Records. Two prior CDs with CatFood Records: Blues at The Border (2011) and Guitar Angels (2014), ranked in the top 40 in Living Blues radio charts.

Slam Allen perfected his already refined entertainer persona in James Cotton's Blues Band, with which he toured for nine years, first as rhythm guitarist, then as lead guitarist and eventually bandleader. Slam has an uncanny ability to hook an audience, a good-time vibe, ever smiling, upbeat and energetic.

A seasoned and internationally recognized touring veteran, Slam Allen is more than a singer, songwriter, and guitar player. He has connected with his audiences like the entertainers of a bygone era - Otis Redding, B.B., Albert, and Freddie King, with some Wilson Picket, James Brown, Sly Stone and a little George Benson and Jimi Hendrix thrown in to the experience.

Slam is forging his legacy in the world of blues and soul. With seven original albums under his belt, he brings back what the music world needs - the love and uplifting honesty that makes for a powerful and entertaining experience.

From Fauré to Cole Porter to Jason Robert Brown, join us as we explore the complexity of love through song. Artistic Director Steven Blier selects four young voices and a pianist for a weeklong residency, which includes daily coaching, rehearsals, and workshops, culminating in a Music Room performance to bring these songs to life. Assisted by Michael Barrett, Associate Artistic Director of the New York Festival of Song (NYFOS), and developed in conjunction with NYFOS, this search for love’s meaning will have us pondering from many musical angles.

Kingston, NY   See Map
Happy Saint Pantrick's Day! On the heels of his triumphant banjoperetta-themed show two weeks ago, The Legend returns to the scene of the crime. There is no part of The Original Pants visible to the audience and only a small bit of infrastructure remains and no one has seen the inside of "Wild" Bill's pants in a long time. Anything might happen in a "Wild" Bill Show except that. What you will see is a rollicking show full of shtik, originals, covers and, of course, a large collection of Irish tunes performed in his own inimitable style. See him and his famous banjo, Golda Starr, on his homefield: The Kingston Artists Collective.

"These Progressive Folk masters are back with a new LP. I do not use the term ‘masters’ lightly as they are one of the few bands that truly capture and refresh the folk variation that happened in the late 1960s....any fan of the Incredible String Band, Steeleye Span, and all the classics of that era should be jumping all over this." -- David Hintz, FolkWorld

The Warp/The Weft, active since 2012 throughout and beyond the Hudson Valley, makes metamorphic rock music, blending the warmth of a good wool sweater and the bleak cold of an upstate winter.

The progressive folk, and occasional psychedelia, the band brings to bear (compared to Fairport Convention and Jethro Tull) is propelled by "spirit-conjuring" tenors and some degree of poetry. The band has just recorded what will soon be its third LP.

The band's most current release, Mapping an Absence (2017) earned praise for its synthesis of styles:
