Coltrane's body of work represents a pinnacle of achievement in the 20th century exerting an influence that goes beyond jazz both spiritually and musically. For Liebman, seeing Coltrane live on many occasions in NYC inspired him to pursue this music. Amy Helm has been making music for most of her life, and won widespread praise as a singer, songwriter and live performer, first as a member of the celebrated alt-country collective Ollabelle and subsequently for her extensive work with her father, musical icon Levon Helm, who passed away in 2012. Amy's solo album, Didn't It Rain also marked the final recording sessions of Levon Helm, who acted as the project's executive producer as well as adding his unmistakable drumming on three tracks; Levon's distinctive count-off can be heard kicking off Amy's rousing take on Martha Scanlan's "Spend Our Last Dime." Grammy nominated artist Patty Smyth and Scandal are back on the road and raring to play for fans new and old. Smyth, a New York City native, was 15-years-old when she played her first gig at New York Folk City and spend the next several years honing her craft. While getting started in the industry, she waited tables at a steakhouse too. It was there that one day she answered a ringing payphone and met Zack Smith, who would later ask her to front a band with him called Scandal. The rest is history. The group burst onto the scene in 1982 with a self-titled debut that turned out to be the best-selling EP in Columbia Records history, featuring the hit single, “Goodbye to You.” From “Goodbye to You,” a #1 MTV video, Scandal included the hits “Love’s Got a Line on You” and “Win Some, Lose Some.” The group’s first length album, The Warrior, released in 1984, climbed into the Top 20 on the sales chart, eventually earning RIAA-certified platinum status, with more than a million in sales. Saturday 7:30 pm | Celebrated Singer-Songwriter To Appear In Hyde Park with Rod MacDonald and Mark Dann Singer-Songwriter, Americana, and Acoustic | Hyde Park Free Library Annex 2 Main St. Hyde Park, NY See Map |
| Another veteran of the Greenwich Village folk scene, Rod MacDonald's happily ensconced in Delray and still manages to eke out a pretty good living with frequent touring and an ongoing series of master classes at FIU where he lectures on songwriting and technique.Prior to relocating to these realms in 1995, MacDonald was a constant presence at many of New York's most prestigious folk clubs, including Gerdes Folk City and the Bottom Line, and his level activity both here and abroad hasn't faltered since. Despite frequent overseas tours, he manages to make regular Florida appearances, not only under his own auspices, but also as part of his Dylan tribute band Big Brass Bed and in a traditional group setting with singer Tracy Sands. Their songs are devoted to social and political commentary; his "American Jerusalem" was hailed for its commentary about the contrast between the rich and the poor. It's little wonder his material has been covered by the likes of Dave Van Ronk, Shawn Colvin. | ||
