Americana, Bluegrass, and Folk/Traditional
East Jersey Olde Towne
1050 River Road
Piscataway, NJ   See Map
This free event will feature two performances from James Reams & The Barnstormers plus so much more! Middlesex County History Day in nearby Piscataway, NJ is a great way to combine fun and education for the whole family. For more information call 732-745-3030, ext. 310. The event will be held rain or shine! Music critic Jerry Paul (former editor of Acoustica) described lead singer James Reams: "James is such an inspiration to watch. He truly feels his music, and sings from his very soul. If James is ever within your area, he is a 'must see' bluegrass icon." James Reams & The Barnstormers provide a contemporary take on traditional bluegrass; blending it with innovation and vitality to create their own branch on the "roots" tree. In a review of an early album by James Reams, fRoots (an international magazine that specializes in world music) declared his music to be "powerful, emotional music that needs to be heard."

A concert will be held within the 39-year-in-the-making Harvey Fite sculpture that is OPUS 40 with 2 uncommonly orchestrated world-music bands, Mamalama and Andes Manta.

Andes Manta performs the vibrant music of the Andes on more than 35 instruments, creating a sound that never fails to bring people to their feet. From Carnegie Hall to the Discovery Channel, from the National Cathedral to Lincoln Center and in hundreds of schools and universities, their powerful and moving performance has played to standing ovation after standing ovation.

Through an uncommon orchestration of harps, strings and ethereal voices, Mamalama weaves together world music, classical minimalism, Renaissance, psychedelia, indie-chamber and vivid lyrical mysticism for an experience best described as "like walking into a dream."

Michael Attanasio
Jazz, Blues
BeanRunner Cafe
201 S. Division Street @ Esther
Peekskill, NY   See Map
Yonkers native and practicing attorney, Michael Attanasio, has been singing for more than 40 years. As a child he learned Sinatra songs through osmosis by listening to his father's records. In his teens he discovered Joe Cocker, Chicago, Led Zeppelin, Santana, Clapton and the Allman Brothers. He spent time in a rock band but before the 70's ended he became captivated by Sara Vaughan, Al Jarreau and Joe Sample. Then came years singing in church, his soulful solos inspiring many. Michael's eclectic tastes are evident in his set list, drawing from the jazz standards of his Sinatra era father and those of his 60's and 70's music awakening period. Jazz, rock, soul, blues; Sinatra, Johnny Hartman, Bobby Darin, Ray Charles, Al Jarreau, Joe Cocker, Lionel Ritchie. Come hear them all in an intimate evening of songs from two generations.

Scott Stapp of Creed
Rock (modern)
Paramount Hudson Valley Theater
1008 Brown Street
Peekskill, NY   See Map
The founding member of Creed chronicled his quest for answers and his dreams, from faith to fatherhood, in chart topping hits like, “My Own Prison”, “Higher”, and “With Arms Wide Open” -all songs that dominated the sonic landscape of the 90s and 2000s. His soul-piercing lyrics backed by thundering rock riffs garnered a Grammy award and countless other accolades of creativity, not to mention legions of fans, who felt a kindred spirit in his honesty. In gratitude for the many interventions made in his behalf, Stapp devotes himself to “paying it forward” to others in need through numerous outreaches- such as the With Arms Wide Open Foundation and CHARM (Children are Magical)- that helped underprivileged children and families around the world. Come see a master of his craft delight the audience with honest, passionate, and just plan amazing music!

Hootenanny Cafe Mini Concerts
Online: www.wtbq.com or 93.5FM, NY   See Map
If John Prine and Mitch Hedberg had a baby, the resulting product would resemble something very close to Portland, OR singer-songwriter John Craigie. Musically comparable to Prine, with the humor and wit of Hedberg, the humble, gracious, and hilarious Craigie is one of the best storytellers of our time. It’s no wonder that Chuck Norris sends him fan mail, and Todd Snider brings him gifts on stage.

The vagabond troubadour has charmed audiences in all 50 states and throughout much of Europe, with a DIY spirit seldom seen these days. While touring solo and with the likes of Todd Snider, the Shook Twins, Nicki Bluhm, and ALO, Craigie has taken the stage at festivals, sold out venues, intimate house concerts, center camp at Burning Man and even Gregory Alan Isakov’s farm. Although based in Portland, Craigie’s true home is on the road, and just like that he’s on to the next town, playing and singing and telling stories to everyone who wants to listen.

LA-based glam rock band are heading to Hudson Valley to play at The Loft in Poughkeepsie with Biters.

First off, Hollywood’s Frankie + The Studs rock like hell. But you can sing along while you jack your fist into the air. They’re a mix of dirty converse, and messy black hair, slender hips and big kohl eyes, sexual tension and youthful verve, and you can tell their record collections are crammed with ’70s pop and glam, like Joan Jett, T. Rex and Bowie. But theirs ain’t no backward-gazing karaoke, and it’s not HBO’s Vinyl, either. No way. This spanking new Hollywood, Califa. quartet plays impassioned rock ’n’ roll music—the essential kind that can only be made by kids who use power-chord shout-outs and spiky lullabies to define their nighttime worlds and busted hearts.

Frontwoman Frankie Clarke glitters, to be sure. She’s slinky and lithesome in black. Daughter of legendary Guns N' Roses guitarist Gilby Clarke, Frankie was destined for rock stardom.

“In short, a night out with James Hill & Anne Janelle is the perfect evening of tunes, stories and musical virtuosity.” — Wellington Dominion-Post

James Hill, “possibly the best ukulele player in the world” (Waikato Times), grew up playing folk, jazz and blues on his ukulele. Anne Janelle, “a cellist of true beauty” (Ottawa Citizen), played only classical music on her cello. But the pair’s differences became their greatest asset: the uke is high, the cello is low; the uke plays short notes, the cello long bow strokes; the uke is all about strumming while the cello radiates melody.

This duo combines their strengths for a unique sound that’s warm, intricate, and completely enchanting.

You may also be interested in attending entire Uke Fest camp, May 26–29, 2017, where James and Anne will be teaching. If you are registering for Uke Fest, concert admission is included in tuition.

"Winard Harper is one of his generation's greatest standards bearers." Downbeat Magazine

Winard Harper has performed with some of the greatest names in jazz. At 20, he was playing the drums first with Dexter Gordon, and then Johnny Griffin, and honed his chops for the next four years under the tutelage of the late, great Betty Carter.

With his brother Philip Harper on trumpet, Winard led The Harper Brothers, one of the hottest groups of the post-bop era and produced the chart topping Remembrance: Live at the Village Vanguard.

Winard has released four CD's to his credit: Be Yourself (1994), Trap Dancer (1998), Winard (1999), and Faith with Carrie Smith (2000). He is one of the most sough-after sidemen on the jazz circuit; has been exploring African rhythms that influence his work, and is noted for his abilities on the cymbals, which under his hand become an outstanding solo instrument all their own.
