Sunday 9:00 pm to 10:00 pm | Klezmatics Eastern European Jewish music | Hootenanny Cafe Mini Concerts Online: www.wtbq.com or 93.5FM, NY See Map |
Since their emergence, the Klezmatics have raised the bar for Eastern European Jewish music and helped to change the face of contemporary Yiddish culture. Today they celebrate 30 years! With three original members—Lorin Sklamberg, Frank London and Paul Morrissett, and longtime members Matt Darriau, Lisa Gutkin and Richie Barshay, the Klezmatics are without a doubt the most successful proponents of klezmer music in the world. In 2003 the band wrote new music to a collection of lyrics by Woody Guthrie, which resulted in a 2006 Grammy Award for Wonder Wheel. But the project actually came about because Nora (Woody’s daughter) discovered that eight were Hanukkah songs! Hanukkah you ask? Woody’s mother in law was the Yiddish songwriter Eliza Greenblatt, and the bond with her and her culture much informed his creative thinking during his Brooklyn years. These songs, along with new instrumentals became Woody Guthrie’s Happy Joyous Hanukkah. | ||
