Big Bad Voodoo Daddy is a contemporary swing revival band from southern California. Their notable singles include "Go Daddy-O", "You & Me & the Bottle Makes 3 Tonight (Baby)", and "Mr. Pinstripe Suit". The band played the Super Bowl XXXIII half-time show in 1999.
The band was originally formed in Ventura, California, in 1989 by leader Scotty Morris. The band was named Big Bad Voodoo Daddy after Scotty Morris met blues guitar legend Albert Collins at one of the latter's concerts. "He signed my poster 'To Scotty, the big bad voodoo daddy'," Morris explains. "I thought it was the coolest name I ever heard on one of the coolest musical nights I ever had. So when it came time to name this band, I didn't really have a choice. I felt like it was handed down to me." He and Kurt Sodergren are the two "original" members, with the rest of the band joining later. The band has concentrated on the swing of the 1940s and '50s, playing clubs and lounges in their early years.

Some artists document their lives through music. Others chronicle their times. It’s a rare artist who can do both, telling their own story through songs that also encapsulate the essence of people and places who have helped define their era. Woody Guthrie comes to mind, so does Bob Dylan. Yet few others, for whatever genius they may possess, can relate their own history to the history experienced by those who find that common bond, be it a coming of age, living through the same realities or sharing similar experiences. Ellis Paul is one of those gifted singer/songwriters. Though some refer to him as a folksinger, he is more a singular storyteller, a musician whose words reach out from inside and yet also express feelings, thoughts and sensibilities that most can relate to some, regardless of age or upbringing. The exhilaration of the open road. A celebration of heroes. Hope for redemption. Descriptions of those both near and dear. Sharing of love; intimate, passionate and enduring. | ||
