With a voice praised as “a deep contralto as smooth and dark as the richest espresso” (Jazz Times, November 2007,) award-winning jazz vocalist Alexis Cole has made an impressive impact on audiences ever since she first took the stage as a teenager. Winner of the 2007 Jazzmobile competition and an award recipient of the Montreux Jazz Vocal Competition, Alexis was cited as "a rising star in the jazz world” by Hot House Magazine.

With seven records so far, Alexis Cole is on her way to becoming the next great singer.

Christopher Loudon of Jazz Times says “Cole’s easy sense of swing is strongly reminiscent of Sarah Vaughan”. Ernest Barteldes for AllAboutJazz writes “Cole’s voice is inspired”. While Scott Yanow states “Alexis Cole grows in power, maturity and depth each year. She continues to have unlimited potential.”

Hootenanny Cafe Mini Concerts
Online: www.wtbq.com or 93.5FM, NY   See Map
E'lissa Jones recently released her 6th CD Fire & Sun to be featured at her upcoming performances and concerts. E'lissa is a beautiful singer, prolific songwriter, violinist, pianist, and guitarist. She is an exceptionally talented artist with a wide range that includes a dark and melancholy voice with a velvety quality. Her songs embrace audiences with her powerful melodies and expressive lyrics. Influential styling ranges from folk music to rock in her catalogue of over 300 original songs.

This young artist has performed background vocals from 2001 to 2006 with blues legend Wilson Pickett, touring with Ray Charles, Al Green, and many more. E'lissa, in her folk music realm, has also opened up for legends Pete Seeger and Steve Forbert, and has played violin for old favorites like Bobby Vee.

Aptly named, E'lissa Jones' new CD catches the fire and showcases the sun in a variety of musical styles indicative of her background.

"The twin Moutin Brothers, Francois and Louis, have made their marks over the years as co-leaders of the Moutin Reunion Quartet, and as much-in-demand sideman due to the mastery of their respective instruments, bass and drums.

The Moutins now reveal their new project, the Moutin Factory Quintet. One element remains unchanged, and that is the personality of the Moutins' music-- unfettered stylistically, provocatively arranged, and laden with zestful improvisations and interaction.

[CD "Lucky People"] "Through six originals from Paris-based Louis and three from New York resident Francois, plus an Ornette Coleman medley, this new ensemble manages to sound ageless and sublimely vital." - Scott Albin / Jazz Times

Shayna SteeleThe FALCON
1348 Route 9W
Marlboro, NY   See Map
A completely unexpected call in 2005 would drop Shayna Steele squarely in the middle of genre she had absolutely no experience with: Electronica. Hearing that Moby "needed a screamer" for a track on his album "Hotel", resulted in the disc's second single "Raining Again". Two years later, she was laying down vocals for "Extreme Ways (2007)" - Moby's theme song to The Bourne Ultimatum - and "Disco Lies", the first single off Moby's 2008 release "Last Night".

Steele began writing music with partner David Cook in 2002, collaborating on Steele's eponymous debut EP in 2004. The album's breakout soul-funk single "High Yella" achieved the attention of, and performances with, Ledisi, George Clinton and the Sugar Hill Gang, Bjorkestra and Snarky Puppy (2014 Nice Jazz Festival).

It was the release of Shayna's first full-length album "I'll Be Anything", co-written with Cook that put Shayna on the map as a legitimate solo artist.

Orlando Marin, a contemporary of such greats as Tito Puente, Machito, and Tito Rodriguez, is the only orchestra leader from New York’s golden era of mambo who still performs regularly. Orlando formed his first band, Eddie Palmieri and his Orchestra and, since then, has played with several different bands and has performed in the famous Palladium Ballroom. In 1997, Latin music historiographer Max Salazar presented Orlando a plaque in recognition of nearly five decades of uninterrupted contribution to Latin music. In January 2003, Orlando was invited by Latin Jazz station, WPFW, by the Arlington County (Virginia) Cultural Arts Division, and by the Latin American Folk Institute to do a live concert in Washington at The Spectrum Theater and in 2006, Congressman Jose E. Serrano honored Orlando as “The Last Mambo King,” for his continuing to provide Latin American music and his willingness to devote time to helping the less fortunate.

Tal National
Blues, Hip Hop
The FALCON
1348 Route 9W
Marlboro, NY   See Map
By the time Tal National reached international acclaim with 2013’s ‘Kaani’, the band’s first release outside of Niger, they had spent more than a decade crisscrossing their native country, usually on dirt pathways through the Sahara, playing epic five-hour sets, seven days a week, selling their CDs on street corners and roundabouts. In the process, they became Niger’s most popular band, with songs constantly blasted on national TV and cell phones everywhere. Following FatCat’s release of ‘Kaani’, Western audiences and critics quickly embraced the band’s singular and finely-honed sound. NPR were hit by “the band’s tightness and fiery energy”; The Guardian praised “their full-tilt approach, and hypnotic intensity”; whilst Songlines wrote of ““a rich, hybrid sound that draws on familiar West African elements to create something rewardingly fresh and different”. FatCat is releasing the dazzling follow-up, ‘Zoy Zoy’.
