Gabriel Kahane & Rob Moose: The Ambassador and More
Jazz
Caramoor Center for Music and the Arts
149 Girdle Ridge Rd
Katonah, NY   See Map
Fresh off of a triumphant run at BAM’s Harvey Theater in the New York premiere of his acclaimed staged song cycle The Ambassador, Gabriel Kahane, with his longtime collaborator Rob Moose, offers an evening of tender and intimate song. With one foot in the tradition of chamber music, and the other firmly planted in forward-looking folk tinged with a daring harmonic sensibility and mordant lyricism, the two will offer up a dozen of Kahane’s songs interspersed with works by Franz Schubert, Benjamin Britten, Jerome Kern, and John Adams in a performance that may be a blueprint for the 21st century recital.

Gabriel Kahane, piano, guitars, banjo, and vocals Rob Moose, violin and guitars

Amina Figarova Group, Wayne Escoffery, Bart Platteau, Martin Wind, Jason Brown
Jazz
The Falcon
1348 Route 9W
Marlboro, NY   See Map
Composer and pianist Amina Figarova's 12th album, titled Twelve celebrates jazz as an international musical form and New York City as a place where jazz gypsies feel most at home. Figarova wrote a suite of songs for sextet, after moving with her husband and musical partner, flutist Bart Platteau, to NYC from their longtime European base, Twelve is suffused with the heightened expectations, sense of adventure and fresh perceptions that voluntary emigrés enjoy, as well as the confidence, creative energies and nuanced fulfillment that artists gain from being in the right place at the right time.

The value of sustaining such a seasoned and sensitive sextet, becomes obvious when music of such as Figarova's is heard. Firmly grounded, the Amina Figarova Sextet will keep moving, growing, evolving, engaging with listeners who are moved, perhaps, to eagerly anticipate "Thirteen".

When O’Leary launched his own band in 2008 and invited her to join, she jumped at the chance. Of McCarthy, O'Leary has said, "she's my favorite person in the world to sing with."

McCarthy’s vocals are powerful and soulful and her band plays a mix of blues, funk, R&B and rock—including original and cover material—and features Pete Hop on guitar, Scott Milici on keys, Doug Abramson on bass and Jerry Teters on drums.

Iris Ornig was a huge fan of Michael—and she still is! He was a master of his style, and a supremely creative dance innovator. Iris created arrangements of Michael’s hit songs, honoring his creative spirit through jazz - twisting tunes, shifting rhythms, exploding arrangements and exploring new harmonies.

Iris's latest CD, “No Restrictions”, has earned extremely positive reviews from Downbeat (one of the Best Albums 2013), Jazziz, All About Jazz, and The New York City Jazz Record, to name a few.

“…’No Restrictions’ is a mature, distinctive and captivating disc. It’s the elegant work of an exceptional artist at the height of her powers.” –Jazziz (Hryar Attarian).
