Greg Artzner and Terry Leonino, better known as the award-winning folk duo Magpie, have created a fascinating work with “Sword of the Spirit,” a song cycle which looks at the history and legacy of abolitionist John Brown and the famous Harper’s Ferry raid of October, 1859 which many historians consider to be the pivotal event that led inexorably to the American Civil War less than two years later. Greg and Terry’s career as musicians, actors and playwrights has spanned more than 36 years, has taken them to concert stages all over North America and abroad, and has garnered them numerous awards including 3 Wammie awards from the Washington Area Music Association, the John Denver Memorial Award for environmental activism through music, an Addie Award for their song “Take Me Back to Harpers Ferry,” and the “Spirit of John Brown” award from the Adirondack-based organization John Brown Lives! Scott Wolfson and Other Heroes is an indie folk-pop band from Jersey City, NJ, based around the songwriting of Scott Wolfson. Since their inception in 2011, they have garnered notice from songwriting contests, reviewers, audiences throughout the Mid-Atlantic area, and radio stations worldwide. Their 2014 debut album, Life on Fire, has reached #8 on the Roots Music Report folk charts, with two singles charting in the Top 10. Reviewers are calling them “musical scamps” and “the future of folk rock,” who take the stage “effortlessly and joyously” with “a fine, fresh, new sound,” one “that could work on street corners or big stages.” With Scott's haunting voice backed by the band's tightly-woven arrangements, they turn stark tales of love and death into toe-tapping celebrations of the human condition in all its complicated glory.

The FALCON

Marlboro, NY   See Map
"It's all about the song. It has to be. If it isn't, then as far as I'm concerned, you're missing the point." These words spoken by Pat O'Shea in a recent interview speak volumes about the singer/songwriter/guitarist and his band The Honest Men.

In a world where much of the music of the day runs rampant with empty bravado and even emptier content, a band like The Honest Men is a lung full of fresh air. Five members all focused on "the song".

"It's really a 'sum of the parts' kind of thing" explains O'Shea. "I'm a guitarist, a guitar solo is a great thing - as long as it serves the song. But not every song needs a guitar solo or maybe not even any kind of solo. And these are the kind of songs we write. Songs that speak, that speak to me. If it speaks to me then I have to believe it's going to speak to others."

"It's straight ahead American rock and roll," says O'Shea.

Spero Plays Nyro, a celebration of the music of Laura Nyro
with THE CHRISTINE SPERO GROUP
Pop/Soft Rock, Covers, and Jazz
Bearsville Theater
291 Tinker Street
Woodstock, NY   See Map
In the new, one-of-a-kind show, “Spero Plays Nyro,” the Christine Spero Group maintains the integrity of Laura Nyro’s music while infusing it with their own unique personality. A CD of the same name will be released this September, street release date October 14th. Christine has loved Laura's music from a young age when she was given Eli and the Thirteenth Confession by a radio DJ friend. She was inspired by Laura's music to be bold in writing, singing, and playing piano. Laura Nyro was the quintessential singer/songwriter and pianist whose groundbreaking music crossed the genres of folk, rock, and jazz. She became one of the most covered artists in the 1960's and 1970's with such songs as “Eli's Coming,” “Stoned Soul Picnic,” “Wedding Bell Blues,” and “Sweet Blindness.” Her tragically premature passing in 1997 shocked her fans and in 2012 she was inducted into the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame.

The hot Latin sounds of Soñando have earned them the reputation as the Hudson Valley's premier Latin band. This spicy blend of music and musicians have performed in clubs, at private functions, community festivals, benefit concerts, on radio and television, as well as the Puerto Rico Day Parade in NYC, but the band is at home wherever a dance floor can be cleared. Fueled by a fiery rhythm section and high-octane horns, Soñando plays a wide variety of latin styles from Plena and Son to Salsa and Merengue!

"The name of the band is Spanish for "dreaming" but when the hordes come out for Soñando, they don't sleepwalk-they dance. And we're not talking a few perfunctory head-bobs or butt-wiggles, they dance until they go up in flames like, Tula's unquenchable bedroom in the Cuban lyrics above." -Woodstock Times-

National Touring Artists Greg Greenway, Pat Wictor, and Joe Jencks have made their mark as veteran touring singer-songwriters, now as Brother Sun. The trio's harmonies, as much as their lyrics, tell what they are about: warm as a campfire, stirring as a gospel church, rousing as a call to arms. Fusing folk, Americana, blues, pop, jazz, rock, and a cappella singing, Brother Sun is an explosion of musical diversity and harmony, in the finest of male singing traditions.

. After two years of nationwide touring and performances marked by outstanding songwriting, ethereal harmonies, off-the-cuff humor, and standing ovations, they released Some Part of the Truth. The CD debuted at #1 on the Folk-DJ Chart, where it remained for 2 months, & spent 5 consecutive months in the Top-40.
