From the halcyon days of the so-called “Young Lions” of the eighties till now, there have been trumpeters heralded as “the next big thing” or “the second coming of…” Through all the hype, the New York-born, trumpeter, arranger, composer and bandleader David Weiss has been a light at the end of the jazz tunnel. Through his leadership of the masterful New Jazz Composers Octet and his own sextet, Weiss has shown his unfailing dedication to the illumination and expansion of the marvelous sixties – from Freddie Hubbard and Miles Davis to the Blue Note catalog and beyond. In a jazz climate that rewards neo-conservative tributes and exercises in deconstruction, Weiss has distinguished himself - finding flexibility and innovation in music that has it’s roots in the mainstream. Featuring David Weiss/Trumpet, Myron Walden/Alto Sax, Ben Wendel/Tenor Sax, David Bryant/Piano, Luques Curtis/Bass and Jonathan Barber/Drums

On the last Friday of the month, me, Studio Stu will be musically exploding at my favorite joint in the Hudson Valley, Market Market Cafe. Each month I will bring a different, unique blend of eclectic musicians together to mingle in the musically unknown. This month, its Discombobulated with Studio Stu, Peter Head, Drummer TBA, Jack Ryon, and Cory Boris...ya know it's gonna be entertaining.Last month was standing room only...come early, stay late... This is one very cool joint, a bit of Brooklyn in the middle of all these trees. (there are a lot of trees up here) So, come have a drink, some incredible, and I mean, incredible food, and I'll play my little heart out with the band du jour to soothe yer soul with some tunes that are familiar, yet, not. Come on down and I'll explain it to you...bring your mother too. Check Out Studio Stu...

Saturday 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm | Bernard Purdie | The FALCON 1348 Route 9W Marlboro, NY See Map |
Which musician did Aretha Franklin definitely NOT want missing from the line-up when she recorded her most inspired albums at the beginning of the seventies. Who provided the back-beat for Steely Dan's "Aja", and for whom have Isaac Hayes, Donny Hathaway, B.B. King, "Sweet" Lou Donaldson, Joe Cocker and Hank Crawford reserved that stool behind the drum kit? The list is incomplete; it must be, because no other drummer in the last three decades has seen the interior of a recording studio as often as Bernard "Pretty" Purdie. The 57 year-old native of Elkton, Maryland has laid down the beat on over 3000 albums to date. The legendary drummer's style is described as the "funkiest soul beat" in the business. Purdie has never limited his talents, but has consistently sought out new musical experiences, anchoring sessions with the Rolling Stones, James Brown and Tom Jones with equal ease. "DRIVE" and "GROOVE" are definitely not missing from his vocabulary.

Lauded for her "lightly transparent performances of Chopin and Scriabin,” The Washington Post (July 2013) calls her “uncommonly attractive and entertaining...managing a comfortable balance of the formal and the casual.” Her 2013 self-released bilingual album, Victory, has been hailed by reviewers as "an eye opener," (Wildy's World) and "unparalleled in its aesthetics and musical elegance," (Indiemunity). Sasha is currently a featured artist in this year's 2013-2014 Lincoln Center Meet The Artist school series and Carnegie Hall's Musical Explorers program. Her bilingual program, “I Speak Music,” has also toured New York City schools for The Center For Arts Education. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RUIjXCp7W-s
