With a voice praised as “a deep contralto as smooth and dark as the richest espresso” (Jazz Times, November 2007,) award-winning jazz vocalist Alexis Cole has made an impressive impact on audiences ever since she first took the stage as a teenager.

Winner of the 2007 Jazzmobile competition and an award recipient of the Montreux Jazz Vocal Competition, Alexis was cited as "a rising star in the jazz world” by Hot House Magazine.

With seven records so far, Alexis Cole is on her way to becoming the next great singer. Christopher Loudon of Jazz Times says “Cole’s easy sense of swing is strongly reminiscent of Sarah Vaughan”.

Ernest Barteldes for AllAboutJazz writes “Cole’s voice is inspired”.

Keyboardist/arranger Pete Levin has performed and recorded with hundreds of jazz and pop artists, and received critical accolades for his 15 year association with the legendary Gil Evans and his 8 years with jazz icon Jimmy Giuffre.

Craig Bickhardt
Singer-Songwriter, Country, and Folk/Traditional
Hootenanny Cafe Mini Concerts
Online: www.wtbq.com or 93.5FM, NY   See Map
By the time Craig Bickhardt was 25 years old he'd signed a record contract with Bob Dylan's manager Albert Grossman; inked an artist development deal with legendary talent impresario and head of Atlantic Records Ahmet Ertegun; had one of his songs recorded by Art Garfunkel; shared the concert stage with Bruce Springsteen, Stephen Stills and Harry Chapin; lost nearly everything he owned in a California house fire; and had his only guitar stolen by a junkie in NYC. It appeared as if his budding career had all the makings of a Llewen Davis-esque tale. Despite steady touring and achieving respectable successes such as scoring music for the Academy Award winning film Tender Mercies and writing songs that have been covered by Johnny Cash, Ray Charles, B. B. King, Alison Krauss and others, Bickhardt remains a relatively undiscovered artist himself. His latest CD, The More I Wonder, features his beautifully weathered vocals, skillful guitar work and intelligent songwriting at its best.

Born in New York City, Feiner began his foray into music on the guitar, earning a Bachelor of Music degree in Jazz Studies/Guitar at the Hartt School of Music. During the early ‘90s he was a respected guitarist on the New York jazz scene, playing with some of the city’s finest musicians.

In 1999, during his first trip to Brazil, Feiner discovered the pandeiro. He moved to Rio de Janeiro in 2001 and after only a few years became a respected pandeirista. However, it is Feiner’s innovative mixture of the pandeiro with jazz and other genres, which has set him apart. With his “Pandeiro Jazz” project, he has helped expand the possibilities and perception of the Brazilian pandeiro worldwide.

In March 2014 Feiner released his fourth album, A View From Below, which also highlights his talents as a composer.

Downbeat magazine gave it 4-stars and wrote, “Precise, yet fluid, funky grooves ... a tightly locked momentum compelled by one tiny, yet mighty, drum.”

Sex Mob, Steven Bernstein, Briggan Krauss, Tony ScherrThe FALCON
1348 Route 9W
Marlboro, NY   See Map
After assembling the band Sex Mob began a residency at the Knitting Factory, playing predominantly originals written by Bernstein. During a special evening of film music, the crowd went crazy for the “James Bond Theme,” and Bernstein realized that the audience was much more attuned to their playing when they recognized the tune.

The band started to expand their songbook, but not to the same old, tired jazz standards. Songs by Prince, the Grateful Dead, the Rolling Stones, and even the “Macarena” , the only rule being that the song had to have such a strong melody that it could withstand serious deconstruction.

Bernstein said in Jazz Asylum, “I realize that’s what jazz musicians have always done. That’s how Lester Young got popular; it’s how Charlie Parker got popular; it’s how Miles Davis got popular; that’s how John Coltrane got popular. They played the songs that everyone knew and because they could recognize the song, then that invited them into their style.”

On the last Friday of the month, me, Studio Stu will be musically exploding at my favorite joint in the Hudson Valley, Market Market Cafe. Each month I will bring a different, unique blend of eclectic musicians together to mingle in the musically unknown. This month, its DickNixon with Studio Stu, Mark Dziuba, T.Xiques, Jack Ryon, and Cory Boris...ya know it's gonna be entertaining.

Last month was standing room only...come early, stay late...

This is one very cool joint, a bit of Brooklyn in the middle of all these trees. (there are a lot of trees up here)

So, come have a drink, some incredible, and I mean, incredible food, and I'll play my little heart out with the band du jour to soothe yer soul with some tunes that are familiar, yet, not. Come on down and I'll explain it to you...bring your mother too.

West Shokan, NY   See Map
Superb playing and distinctive vocals are woven seamlessly around well-crafted and powerful songs. With easy-going rapport and obvious joy from performing, He spans a wide range of musical genres, lightly touching down in some rather surprising places.

Audiences find much to relate to in his heartfelt songwriting; words and music draw on a wealth of experience from a fascinating and well-traveled life.

Whether it's channeling his inner old blues master in songs like "I Got the River (in my Backyard)" to addressing existential issues in "No Matter How Big You Are" or to trying to outrun heartache in "If Time were a Highway," one is left with some moving and unforgettable stories and images.

Aided by outstanding dexterity and a slightly raspy baritone, Ron's music touches on universal themes that can at once entertain, inspire and often move some feet.

"Well-sung, well-crafted, and superbly played original compositions." ~NY Times.
