The FALCON

Marlboro, NY   See Map
Sculptor Sydney Cash mounts a three month ”work-in-progress” exhibition at The Falcon in Marlboro NY, beginning February 2014.

The show will feature Cash’s new dimensional paintings and portraits in space-modulating installations. Some pieces will span the entire width of the club. Some will include the tables, integrating elements of his light sculpture to the surprise and delight of the Falcon audience!

What does this Work-in-Progress mean? It means the show is alive. It will change frequently as Cash respond to the space, the music and the experience on a weekly basis.

Sydney Cash's studios are nearby in Marlboro. With a key to the club, his work-in-progress may happen at any time, day or night. This is a very special opportunity for the artist, whose experimental ideas will be manipulated in continuing improvisation, complimenting the music being performed, and engaging an audience that wants to be thrilled with “all that jazz”.

Opening Act!
with Lost Leaders, Peter Cole, Byron Isaacs, Lee Falco
The FALCON
1348 Route 9W
Marlboro, NY   See Map
If you took your copies of Deja Vu, Bookends, Full Moon Fever and Disraeli Gears and melted them into one L.P. it might sound like Lost Leaders, the alchemical brew of Peter Cole and Byron Isaacs.

The project was born at Levon Helm's studio in Woodstock, N.Y. in the winter of 2011. The barn was a second home for Byron, bass player for the Levon Helm Band, performing at the Midnight Rambles and on Levon's "Dirt Farmer" and "Electric Dirt" albums, both of which featured Byron's songwriting. Peter and Byron took a week between Saturday Rambles and, with the winter sunlight coming through the plate-glass windows, worked out original tunes with Grammy-winning house engineer Justin Guip.

The duo distills the songs to their most essential elements: their two voices and two guitars contrast with the lushness of the studio recordings. Their arrangements of songs by Beck, Pete Townsend, Neil Young and Tom Petty illustrate their haunting vocal blend and instrumental ingenuity.

Cash has been part of The Falcon family since its inception as a legendary house concert venue in 2001, and has continued to collaborate with The Falcon, its mission and its vibration. His optical panels were a permanent part of the original Falcon's permanent collection. Most memorably, a bright transparent structure of red yarn - created in front of a performance by the Kelvin Sholar group - jumping, wiggling and jiving with the music.

What does this Work-in-Progress mean? It means the show is alive. It will change frequently as Cash respond to the space, the music and the experience on a weekly basis.

"Transition Quartet is a straight-ahead, burning, energetic, swinging aggregation. Reminiscent of the 60's and 70's when the organ bands of Jimmy Smith, Larry Young, John Patton, Jimmy McGriff, Brother Jack McDuff, and Shirley Scott held sway over the anointed, jazz intelligencia"

From the time he arrived in New York in 1986, saxophonist Craig Handy was acknowledged as a musician with a big, burly tenor sound, sharp wit, and above all, individuality. Over the next few years he would breathe life into those accolades through a number of important associations: from Betty Carter to Herbie Hancock.

His new album, Craig Handy & 2nd Line Smith, is a collaboration with the band, 2nd Line Smith, has the New Orleans traditions of a second-line brass band. The CD features guests Wynton Marsalis and Dee Dee Bridgewater.

Handy has played with such jazz luminaries as Wynton Marsalis and Elvin Jones, and was a member of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers.

The Circus Comes to Town
with The Slambovian Circus of Dreams
Americana, Singer-Songwriter, and Rock (modern)
Acoustic Cafe Music Series
25 Fremont Ave
Park Ridge, NJ   See Map
Formed in Sleepy Hollow, New York over a decade ago, The Slambovian Circus of Dreams (AKA The Grand Slambovians) pioneered the alt-folk/americana genre, staying on the fringes of the music industry and under the radar while producing several critically acclaimed studio albums. ‘A Box of Everything,’ the band’s new release, is a compilation of the ‘Greatest Hits’ you’ve never heard from this reclusive band.

Their melodic avant-folk conjures a quirkier Tom Petty or fuller Buffalo Tom with an exotic instrumental arsenal. If you like Dylan, Bowie, The Decemberists, you’ll find a lot to love about this band which features an otherworldly slide mandolin, accordion, cello and styles ranging from dusty Americana ballads to Pink Floydesque cinematic anthems.

The Purple Crayon
52 Main Street
Hastings on Hudson, NY   See Map
Swear and Shake is quickly rising on the music scene; they’ve toured with The Lumineers, Delta Rae and more, and have played festivals like Governors Ball, SXSW and Mountain Jam. Their “postcard-perfect indie folk with an undercurrent of sly humor” is making a name for Swear and Shake as “a band you’ve got to see.” The energetic, joyful quartet even has local roots - the group formed at SUNY Purchase with a demo recorded in a dorm room, which quickly began to circulate and attract attention. Now they're gaining praise from Paste, the New York Times, Time Out New York and more, particularly for thier live shows: "It's clear that the band thrives in a live setting."

Experience the "folksy, foot-stomping rock" in person when Swear and Shake comes to The Purple Crayon for an uplifting show in a beautiful setting.

"Winard Harper is one of his generation's greatest standards bearers." Downbeat Magazine

Winard Harper has performed with some of the greatest names in jazz. At 20, he was playing the drums first with Dexter Gordon, and then Johnny Griffin, and honed his chops for the next four years under the tutelage of the late, great Betty Carter.

With his brother Philip Harper on trumpet, Winard led The Harper Brothers, one of the hottest groups of the post-bop era and produced the chart topping Remembrance: Live at the Village Vanguard.

Winard has released four CD's to his credit: Be Yourself (1994), Trap Dancer (1998), Winard (1999), and Faith with Carrie Smith (2000). He is one of the most sough-after sidemen on the jazz circuit; has been exploring African rhythms that influence his work, and is noted for his abilities on the cymbals, which under his hand become an outstanding solo instrument all their own.

The Roadside Attraction is real American roots music - with elements of country, bluegrass, blues, folk, jazz and rock sewn into the fabric of their sound. Full of energy and emotion, the core of this ensemble is singer/songwriter Bob Stump on guitar, Doug Moody on fiddle and Johnny Resk on percussion.

Their three part harmonies and virtuoso musicianship have set them apart. Doug Moody’s fiddle with Bob Stump’s vocals can be likened to Willie Nelson with Mickey Raphael’s harmonica. Bob has recently inked deals with music publishers in Nashville and L.A. and his song the "Cowboy In Me" has aired on Sirius XM satellite radio.

Based in Upstate NY, the band performs concerts and club dates throughout the Northeast. Bob's second CD "Stumpgrass Live" is in the editing stages and will be available soon.

The show will feature Cash’s new dimensional paintings and portraits in space-modulating installations. Some pieces will span the entire width of the club. Some will include the tables, integrating elements of his light sculpture to the surprise and delight of the Falcon audience!
