Friday 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm | Opening Act! with Lost Leaders, Peter Cole, Byron Isaacs, Lee Falco | The FALCON 1348 Route 9W Marlboro, NY See Map |
If you took your copies of Deja Vu, Bookends, Full Moon Fever and Disraeli Gears and melted them into one L.P. it might sound like Lost Leaders, the alchemical brew of Peter Cole and Byron Isaacs. The project was born at Levon Helm's studio in Woodstock, N.Y. in the winter of 2011. The barn was a second home for Byron, bass player for the Levon Helm Band, performing at the Midnight Rambles and on Levon's "Dirt Farmer" and "Electric Dirt" albums, both of which featured Byron's songwriting. Peter and Byron took a week between Saturday Rambles and, with the winter sunlight coming through the plate-glass windows, worked out original tunes with Grammy-winning house engineer Justin Guip. The duo distills the songs to their most essential elements: their two voices and two guitars contrast with the lushness of the studio recordings. Their arrangements of songs by Beck, Pete Townsend, Neil Young and Tom Petty illustrate their haunting vocal blend and instrumental ingenuity.

Saturday 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm | Craig Handy & Transition Quartet, Mart Chertkoff, Kyle Koehler, Steve Williams | The FALCON 1348 Route 9W Marlboro, NY See Map |
"Transition Quartet is a straight-ahead, burning, energetic, swinging aggregation. Reminiscent of the 60's and 70's when the organ bands of Jimmy Smith, Larry Young, John Patton, Jimmy McGriff, Brother Jack McDuff, and Shirley Scott held sway over the anointed, jazz intelligencia" From the time he arrived in New York in 1986, saxophonist Craig Handy was acknowledged as a musician with a big, burly tenor sound, sharp wit, and above all, individuality. Over the next few years he would breathe life into those accolades through a number of important associations: from Betty Carter to Herbie Hancock. His new album, Craig Handy & 2nd Line Smith, is a collaboration with the band, 2nd Line Smith, has the New Orleans traditions of a second-line brass band. The CD features guests Wynton Marsalis and Dee Dee Bridgewater. Handy has played with such jazz luminaries as Wynton Marsalis and Elvin Jones, and was a member of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers. http://youtu.be/PRJVW44GHdQ
