BEST OF HUDSON VALLEY- 2013 READER'S PICK- BEST BRUNCH!
with Akie Bermiss
Singer-Songwriter. Pianist
The FALCON
1348 Route 9W
Marlboro, NY   See Map
Gifted pianist, composer, and singer, Akie Bermiss, has been a Man of Letters since he was still in "small clothes". Bermiss began writing music criticism in his years at Bard College, finishing with a degree in music composition. He also studied American Music (read: tin pan alley, broadway musicals, and jazz) and writing (read: wrote some bad poetry and called it good).

To his friends, he is considered a musical snob of the highest order; to his enemies — a musical charlatan of the basest variety. Among other things he is the author of a children’s book (“I Hate to Be Sick” - Scholastic), a lover of science fiction, a huge fan of cigars, and he takes his bourbon: neat.

The musical interaction touches upon issues of cultural transformation, identity, and the retention and continuity of values and practices from culture to culture. It is this resulting hybridization of rhythmic style and instruments that enriches our American musical traditions. The purpose of the program is to educate and inspire the general public, students, and musicians on both history and music. It is presented during the month of February as a contribution to programs honoring the nation's celebration of "Black History Month."

This project is made possible, in part, with funds from Orange County Tourism and the County of Orange.

Although Popa Chubby grew up in the 1970s, he took his cue from artists of the '60s, including Sly & the Family Stone, Jimi Hendrix, and Eric Clapton, among others.

Chubby's first big break was winning a national blues talent search sponsored by KLON, a public radio station in Long Beach, California. He won New Artist of the Year, and opened the Long Beach Blues Festival in 1992. Chubby played more than 200 club dates a year through the '90s.

His Sony/Okeh debut, Booty and the Beast, was produced by legendary Atlantic Records engineer/producer Tom Dowd, whose recordings by Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, Wilson Pickett, and others are timeless.

Troubled by the war in Iraq, Chubby released his most political album, Peace, Love and Respect, followed by Big Man Big Guitar; Stealing the Devil's Guitar; Electric Chubbyland; Vicious Country; Universal Breakdown Blues followed in 2013 and featured Chubby's cover version of "Over the Rainbow" as its centerpiece.

Recent years have put the two together touring with the Levon Helm Band, Phil Lesh & Friends, Hot Tuna, & joining Little Feat at their Feat Fan Excursions. Among many recordings, they appear on Hot Tuna’s Steady as She Goes, Jorma Kaukonen’s, River of Time, & Helm’s MerleFest Ramble, & the Grammy Award winning Dirt Farm.

Marlboro, NY   See Map
Sculptor Sydney Cash mounts a three month ”work-in-progress” exhibition at The Falcon in Marlboro NY, beginning February 2014.

The show will feature Cash’s new dimensional paintings and portraits in space-modulating installations. Some pieces will span the entire width of the club. Some will include the tables, integrating elements of his light sculpture to the surprise and delight of the Falcon audience!

What does this Work-in-Progress mean? It means the show is alive. It will change frequently as Cash respond to the space, the music and the experience on a weekly basis.

Sydney Cash's studios are nearby in Marlboro. With a key to the club, his work-in-progress may happen at any time, day or night. This is a very special opportunity for the artist, whose experimental ideas will be manipulated in continuing improvisation, complimenting the music being performed, and engaging an audience that wants to be thrilled with “all that jazz”.

The Purple Crayon
52 Main Street
Hastings on Hudson, NY   See Map
Singer-songwriter Lucy Kaplansky is in high demand among her fellow folk artists. Her outstanding voice and her gift for writing have lent themselves to many collaborations with her peers, including John Gorka, Dar Williams, Richard Shindell, Shawn Colvin, and more. John Gorka has called her "one of the great singers and one of the greatest harmony singers ever." The praise and recognition she receives from other singer-songwriters is reason enough to acknowledge Kaplansky's great talents, but she continues to wow critics as well. Able to combine beautiful language with robust stories, her songs are "about life itself, in all its awkward, emotional, and difficult glory. There's poetry in there, but not at the cost of the stories themselves."

It's clear that Kaplansky has an innate gift for tellling stories, and a gorgeous voice with which to bring her characters to life. Her performance at The Purple Crayon promises to be an intimate, beautiful experience.

Seeking a change from drumming in classic rock bands for thirty years Jack auditioned and took Twisted Steele to another level with incredible precision and impeccable timing. Dave is no stranger to the music scene as he fronted many bands in his twenty five year career moving crowds with his wide vocal range and crowd interaction makes his performances unforgettable. Tom has toured for many years in his 30 years of experience. He started touring with southern rock bands in Georgia at the age of eighteen and continues to play through today but on a smaller scale. Tom and Dave met in the band Backlash a well known rock cover band from Orange County NY. They rocked the local area for well over five years until their demise in late 2007.
