Celebrate "The Prime Of Mr. Hugh Brodie"!
with Hugh Brodie's 81st Birthday Bash!
Jazz
The FALCON
1348 Route 9W
Marlboro, NY   See Map
Brodie is a sax player who gets right down to the true nitty gritty. An artist who coaxes every ounce of emotion from his instrument as only a true jazz player can. He is spiritual beyond words in his approach to his craft and even in brief conversation. Brodie emerges as a courteous and affable gentleman - “cool," in the context of an old-school jazzman who knows his stuff like an artisan of another time.

In the 80's Brodie landed a gig with one of his heroes, Illinois Jacquet. But, after only a few years with Jacquet, Brodie decided that he needed to play his own music. He has since created two CD's, "Unforgettable Sax" and "Songs For Anu." He has studied astral projection and applied it to music. This combination of astrology and music has made "Unforgettable Sax" very popular in Europe.

He has developed his own peaceful beliefs that have become integral to his music, centered around a "no hate" policy.

The FALCON

Marlboro, NY   See Map
Which musician did Aretha Franklin definitely NOT want missing from the line-up when she recorded her most inspired albums at the beginning of the seventies. Who provided the back-beat for Steely Dan's "Aja", and for whom have Isaac Hayes, Donny Hathaway, B.B. King, "Sweet" Lou Donaldson, Joe Cocker and Hank Crawford reserved that stool behind the drum kit? The list is incomplete; it must be, because no other drummer in the last three decades has seen the interior of a recording studio as often as Bernard "Pretty" Purdie. The 57 year-old native of Elkton, Maryland has laid down the beat on over 3000 albums to date.

The legendary drummer's style is described as the "funkiest soul beat" in the business. Purdie has never limited his talents, but has consistently sought out new musical experiences, anchoring sessions with the Rolling Stones, James Brown and Tom Jones with equal ease. "DRIVE" and "GROOVE" are definitely not missing from his vocabulary.

There are many musicians that are great with words, and more still that can play with passion and versatility, but the two together are inarguably more rare.

Andy Stack and Tania Elizabeth are two such artists. Intensely musical and intuitive players, they are both known for their abilities to accompany others with amazing sensitivity and accuracy.

They met in a prohibition-era blues club in the middle of NYC, both having come to support a mutual friend who was playing there. A conversation about music turned into a four-hour jam session, and a duo was born. Their sound is an intoxicating blend of old and new; blues and gospel collide with kitchen-party fiddle riffs and crystal clear vocals that shake the foundation of North American music.

To see the two play together, it’s obvious that there is an understanding between them, a foundation from which anything seems possible.

Worth a good, long listen!

Although Popa Chubby grew up in the 1970s, he took his cue from artists of the '60s, including Sly & the Family Stone, Jimi Hendrix, and Eric Clapton, among others.

Chubby's first big break was winning a national blues talent search sponsored by KLON, a public radio station in Long Beach, California. He won New Artist of the Year, and opened the Long Beach Blues Festival in 1992. Chubby played more than 200 club dates a year through the '90s.

His Sony/Okeh debut, Booty and the Beast, was produced by legendary Atlantic Records engineer/producer Tom Dowd, whose recordings by Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, Wilson Pickett, and others are timeless.

Troubled by the war in Iraq, Chubby released his most political album, Peace, Love and Respect, followed by Big Man Big Guitar; Stealing the Devil's Guitar; Electric Chubbyland; Vicious Country; Universal Breakdown Blues followed in 2013 and featured Chubby's cover version of "Over the Rainbow" as its centerpiece.
