Borderline Folk Music Club Concert
with DAVID MASSENGILL, Larry Kolker
Singer-Songwriter, Acoustic, and Blues. Legendary Folk Music
New City Volunteer Ambulance Corps
200 - Congers Road
New City, NY   See Map
A superstar in the world of folk music, David Massengill came on the scene in the 1970s as part of the "fast folk" movement along with Christine Lavin, Suzanne Vega, Paul Kaplan, Tom Intondi, Rod Macdonald, and the late Jack Hardy. David writes and sings his songs in the traditional blues style as taught to him by his mentor, the late great Dave Van Ronk. He was very close with Dave Van Ronk and served as his roadie. The current Coen Brothers movie, "Inside Llewyn Davis" deals with that particular time period. David is an accomplished musician on both, the guitar as well as his original instrument, the mountain dulcimer. His signature song is "The Great American Dream". We at The Borderline are proud to have David Massengill open our 2014 season. Westchester's Larry Kolker, a fantastic blues style singer/songwriter and guitarist as well as a member of our club, will be opening the show for David. Admission is $20 per person, ($15 for Borderline members). (845) 354-4586.

As one of the few musicians in the world actively composing and performing on the rare harp guitar, Dan LaVoie brings a unique sound and texture to fans of acoustic music. Reminiscent of the work of Michael Hedges and Richie Havens, Dan's music is sophisticated and compelling, and his live performances are a special experience visually and aurally.

Dan tours over 100 dates a year extensively throughout the U.S., as well as internationally. Dan has opened and shared the stage with Vance Gilbert, Steve Forbert, Brooks Williams, The Dave Brubeck Quartet, Andy McKee, Levon Helm, and many others.

Her lengthy resume is highlighted by many years of singing and playing alongside her father, with whom she conceived, launched and perfected the Midnight Rambles, intimate performances held since 2004 at his home and studio in Woodstock, N.Y. She co-produced Levon Helm’s 2007 CD Dirt Farmer, which won the Grammy for Best Traditional Folk Album. She is poised to release her first solo album.

Carrie Rodriguez with Luke JacobsThe FALCON
1348 Route 9W
Marlboro, NY   See Map
Carrie Rodriguez came to attention a decade ago performing with singer-songwriter Chip Taylor. The Texas-born classically trained violinist/singer-songwriter delivers everything from dissonant rock fiddle solos to heartfelt ballads. Rodriguez has performed, recorded, or collaborated with many of her heroes including Lucinda Williams, John Prine, Bill Frisell, Mark O'Connor, Los Lobos, Patty Griffin, Alejandro Escovedo, Buddy Miller, and others.

Jacobs is a self taught multi-instrumentalist and songwriter from a small iron mining town in northern Minnesota. He was also a founding member of the popular Minneapolis-based alt country band, Romantica, which is where Carrie first heard him perform. Jacobs’ laid back vocals, blue-collar songs, and soulful pedal steel playing have proven to be the perfect compliment to Carrie’s passion and intensity.

2013 was an adventurous year for Rodriguez and Jacobs, the duo traveled coast to coast across the US and much of Europe.

The FALCON
1348 Route 9W
Marlboro, NY   See Map
Hudson Valley singer/songwriter Willa McCarthy debuted her new band at The Falcon in early September to a standing-room only crowd and everyone had such a good time, we asked her to come back for a repeat performance.

McCarthy has been an active performer in the Hudson Valley for more than a decade, most notably as a member of The Chris O'Leary Band. She met acclaimed and award-winning singer/harp player Chris O’Leary a few years before he became the lead singer for Levon Helm's Barn Burners. When O’Leary launched his own band in 2008 and invited her to join, she jumped at the chance. Of McCarthy, O'Leary has said, "she's my favorite person in the world to sing with."

McCarthy’s vocals are powerful and soulful and her band plays a mix of blues, funk, R&B and rock—including original and cover material—and features Josh Stacy on guitar, Scott Milici on keys, Doug Abramson on bass and Jerry Teters on drums.

Joe Moss

Few up and coming young blues performers walk the walk to the degree of Chicago-based guitarist/bandleader JOE MOSS. One of the hardest-working performers on the Windy City circuit, Moss routinely works up to 28 gigs a month. His sound, a winning mix of blues and R&B flavors paired with original songwriting vision, can be heard blasting out of Chicago venues like Buddy Guy's Legends and House of Blues on a regular basis. His stinging guitar and accomplished vocal style have won him fans citywide. His debut CD "The Joe Moss Band" (212 Records) gives ample proof to the rest of the world of what Midwest blues fans have known for some time: JOE MOSS is for real.

A guitarist since the age of 15, Moss was given his passport into the blues world by Buddy Scott, who noticed Moss at a jam session at Rosa's Blues Lounge on Chicago's west side.

with Rachel Loshak
Singer-Songwriter. Bassist
The FALCON
1348 Route 9W
Marlboro, NY   See Map
What makes Singer/Bassist, Rachel Loshak’s music special is her sophisticated bass-and-voice style. The combination of influences from classical madrigals to alternative pop creates a surprising foundation for her fragile and personal lyrics. Onstage, Rachel captivates audiences.

Rachel moved to New York City from Suffolk, England and honed her craft and style. Rachel has created four full-length LP’s: Firefly (2001), Mint (2003), Peach Pony (2005) (including a duet with Norah Jones) and Colors (2010) was released to critical acclaim. Rachel sang onstage with Norah Jones at the Grammy Awards in 2003 and is featured with her and Jesse Harris on the 2002 Best of the Living Room compilation.
