John Hammond
Blues, Acoustic, and Folk/Traditional
Common Ground @ South Church
South Presbyterian Church, 343 Broadway
Dobbs Ferry, NY   See Map
With a career that spans over three decades, John Hammond is one of handful of white blues musicians who was on the scene at the beginning of the first blues renaissance of the mid-’60s. That revival, brought on by renewed interest in folk music around the U.S., brought about career boosts for many of the great classic blues players, including Mississippi John Hurt, Rev. Gary Davis, and Skip James. Some critics have described Hammond as a white Robert Johnson, and Hammond does justice to classic blues by combining powerful guitar and harmonica playing with expressive vocals and a dignified stage presence. His latest release, “Rough & Tough,” has wasted no time and reached 13 on the Billboard Blues charts. “This recording is not unlike a live show that I would do except that there was no live audience to perform for,” says Hammond. “It’s been a while since I’ve had a solo album out, so I’m very happy with it."

Both traditional and trailblazing...Highly recommended. ***Blues Review Magazine***

Baum's playing has a deep funk to it, with a big influence of Jimmy Smith. And Baum also brings in all kinds of other things as well - dissonant jazz, alternative rock, R&B. He's not too far off from what John Medeski does with Medeski, Martin and Wood, but with more of a blues streak to it. ***Jim Trageser. Escondido, Calif. ***

My primary instrument is my voice, and my guitar embellishes, accompanies, and decorates it. My sound and style are my own. Exposure to music and vocal styles of all types, ranging from standards to jazz to folk/traditional to blues, and to the music of Great Britain, the Appalachian Mountains of Ohio, West Virginia, Virginia, and North Carolina, have influenced my sound and led me to describe my music as "eclectic acoustic." I have opened for Christine Lavin and Dave Cousins and performed in Showcases and the Open Mic Finals at the Towne Crier Cafe in Pawling, NY, and appeared in venues in the Hudson Valley and Southwestern CT. I perform a good mix of songs, including my own compositions, covers, and traditional music. I like to tell the stories of the traditional songs I sing and might focus on the song's provenance, themes, imagery, history, depiction of characters, etc. Listeners tell me that they enjoy learning about this traditional music.

Bill Sims Jr. - "So much of blues today is about having a good time, dancing, and drinking beer," says Sims. "But I like to present a broader spectrum of the blues because I grew up hearing all of it, and I think it's important for people to be aware of the more complete history of the music. 'I've Got My Mojo Working' and 'Everyday I Have the Blues' are great songs, but they're not he whole story. Many different artists were affected by the blues, and I like to show the relationship between, say, Charlie Patton and Miles Davis, or between Lead Belly and Bob Dylan." Adam Levy's former "day job" was playing guitar in Norah Jones' band. Not surprisingly, his own music holds some similarities to his ex-boss'. They share certain laid-back musical qualities that swirl jazz, blues and country colorings into the singer/songwriter palette. In fact, Jones covered Levy's "In the Morning" on her Feels Like Home album.

MOPCO brings its unique brand of improv to Proctors -- Friday nights at 8:00pm.

Created by Kat Koppett in association with Freestyle Repertory Theatre in New York, Spontaneous Broadway is a virtouso evening of musical improv.

The audience submits titles of "songs that have never been written". In a fictional "backer's audition", these titles inspire improvised songs in act one. In act two, the audience's favorite song serves as the basis of an entire (45 minute) Broadway musical, complete with costumes and set.

The format received a rave review from The New York Times when it premiered in New York in 1995. You ain’t seen nuttin’ like it, folks!
