My primary instrument is my voice, and my guitar embellishes, accompanies, and decorates it. My sound and style are my own. Exposure to music and vocal styles of all types, ranging from standards to jazz to folk/traditional to blues, and to the music of Great Britain, the Appalachian Mountains of Ohio, West Virginia, Virginia, and North Carolina, have influenced my sound and led me to describe my music as "eclectic acoustic." I have opened for Christine Lavin and Dave Cousins and performed in Showcases and the Open Mic Finals at the Towne Crier Cafe in Pawling, NY, and appeared in venues in the Hudson Valley and Southwestern CT. I perform a good mix of songs, including my own compositions, covers, and traditional music. I like to tell the stories of the traditional songs I sing and might focus on the song's provenance, themes, imagery, history, depiction of characters, etc. Listeners tell me that they enjoy learning about this traditional music.

“You can’t help being amazed at the power of her presence and the sound of her voice…you cant help but listen” said the Minneapolis Star Tribune when Barb Ryman first came on the music scene. Now a seasoned touring artist, her latest CD, Catch the Sunset, was a 2011 top-played album on the Folk DJ chart. Supported by Prairie Home Companion regulars, Peter Ostroushko and Prudence Johnson, the album is a sweet melodic ride flowing from intimate personal confessions to wise cultural commentaries. In concerts Barb delivers a rich mosaic of contemporary folk, drawing from celtic balladry, early rock, old-time gospel, and her own unique style, all carried with a crystalline voice and skillfully played guitar. A natural storyteller with captivating charm and disarming honesty on stage, Ryman is dedicated to writing music that is healing and restoring to the human spirit. Wednesday 8:00 pm | BCC World Premiere of Anthony Newman’s Angel Oratorio with Bedford Chamber Concerts Classical/Opera | St. Matthews Episcopal Church 382 Cantitoe St. Bedford, NY See Map |
Bedford Chamber Concerts presents Angel Oratorio, an original choral and orchestral work, composed by renowned musician Anthony Newman.
Lloyd Moss of WQXR praised the Angel Oratorio calling it, “… a work in the time-honored tradition of baroque masters, that in its brilliant harmonies speaks eloquently to todays audiences. I have no doubt it will be a part of our timeless musical literature.” Conceived in three parts, the dramatic structure of the composition rests in texts of the Torah, the New Testament and the Book of Enoch, as well as the writings of John Milton, William Shakespeare and William Blake. With these texts as a foundation, the music explores our historic and iconic understanding of angels in their many incarnations. The Oratorio will be performed by the Musica Antiqua, New York chorus and the Bedford Chamber Ensemble conducted by Mary Jane Newman. Number one on the list of Bedford Magazine’s Fabulous 50 things to see in Bedford For tickets or directions visit
