Division Street @ Esther Peekskill, NY See Map |
Lead singer Nee Nee Rushie, a native of Jamaica, leads her five bandmates in what is arguably one of the best upstate NY groups in recent memory. Keeping alive the tradition of roots/ska/reggae realness, the Big Takeover's refreshingly upbeat and original. You'll find it hard to believe that all the cuts on their Debut CD "Following Too Close" are originals, as they magnificently capture early rocksteady riddims with supertight songwriting. The Big Takeover leans hard toward reggae's more up-tempo parents, ska and rocksteady, and their high energy has audiences jamming from start to finish. There newest CD, "Tale of My Life" has gotten rave reviews. "...the intensely jubilant music the Big Takeover makes is the sound of Rushie, as well as her five gifted cohorts, spreading their creative wings—and picking up more and more new fans as they fly along."-Peter Aaron, Chronogram Admission: $10

Mopco features a blend of short and long form improv. Audience members participate as much or as little as they like in the creation of stories, scenes, songs and games enlivened by Mopco's trademarked controlled chaos. There's always a surprise at a Mopco show! "I HAVE SEEN IMPROV BEFORE AND I'M SURE YOU HAVE TOO, BUT THESE ACTORS ARE READY FOR PRIME-TIME. HAVE YOU EVER WATCHED A PERFORMANCE SO BRAVE THAT YOU WANTED TO SHAKE THE PERFORMER'S HAND OR KISS HER CHEEK AFTER THE SHOW? THAT'S HOW I FELT..."--Susan Arbetter, WMHT TV "IF YOU'VE NEVER SEEN A MOP & BUCKET PERFORMANCE, BE ASSURED THEY'RE LAUGH-TO-YOU-CRY FUNNY."--Kristi L. Sunday 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm | Unplugged Sunday with Addie Brownlee, and, Kristina Koller Singer-Songwriter, Acoustic | 12 Grapes Music & Wine Bar 12 North Division Street Peekskill, NY See Map |
Addie's voice is reminiscent of Dusty Springfield. "I love the comparison," she says, "and I love the imagery that her name evokes. It's Americana, Alt/Country, Singer/Songwriter." Addie recently performed a show called "I Beg Your Pardon" with songs of Dolly Parton ("Far and away my biggest influence.") and performed at the 2010 CMJ Showcase. Her song, "Sea Legs" from her new EP "East of Leaving" even features a cameo by Martha Wainwright. Kristina Koller is a young Jazz/pop vocalist and songwriter. A senior at Yorktown High, Kristina has auditioned at some of NY's most prestigious music colleges for Jazz performance. We've been impressed with Kristina's talents since the first time we heard her, and know her future is bright. Kristina's preferred instrument is the ukulele, which makes her all the more endearing. Addie and Kristina will be performing alternating sets. Please join us for an amazing night with two talented singers. **Free Admission**
Sunday 8:00 pm to 9:00 pm | Jaime Michaels Folk/Traditional, Americana, and Singer-Songwriter | Hootenanny Cafe Mini Concerts Online: www.wtbq.com or 93.5FM, NY See Map |
The song. Ask Jaime Michaels what’s the most important aspect of what he’s been doing for the past few decades and that will be his answer. The song. It shows in the craftsmanship of his tunes, in the care that he applies to each choice of a word, each musical phrase. Or as WAMC’s Wanda Adams Fischer put it in a review: “That's how it is with Jaime. When you hear him sing, you can tell whether he's smiling, yearning, pining, or questioning. He writes songs with special meanings… with a sense of purpose, a sense of belief that music is as critical to life as breathing itself.”
