Possessing an exquisite musicality rooted in modern-day folk, tuneful rock and countrified jangle pop plus a lyrical perspective brimming with real life and mature emotion, the two singer-songwriters known as Open Book have refined their distinctive sound with their sophomore CD release, The Things We Keep. Both Michele Rubin and Rick Gedney exhibit a gift for songwriting that entwines melody invention with astute observations of the heart backed by a tapestry of guitars. The Things We Keep presents eleven original compositions filled with sharp hooks and sticky truths while adorning the whole with the kind of shimmering male-female harmonies rarely heard in today's music.

BIG "FRANK MIRRA " & THE HEALERS, AND PERFORMING AT BRIAN'S BACKYARD BBQ
Blues
Brian's Backyard BBQ
1665 RTE 211 EAST
Middletown, NY   See Map
HERE'S WHAT IS BEING SAID ABOUT BIG FRANK & THE HEALERS: “…No-nonsense, straight-ahead Chicago blues… Mirra’s guitar playing–especially his wicked slide work–propels all the tracks…“Vintage 1040” is a real find.”–Bill Wasserzieher, Blues Revue

“Big Frank and the Healers have built quite a following since their formation in 1994. Mixing Chicago Blues with the sounds of the Delta, Big Frank Mirra plays some nasty slide guitar and contributes soulful vocals that fit both styles well. The band has previously recorded an EP, but are renowned for their live shows…The band plays with that chemistry and quality that demonstrates they had many live performances together…This is a fine addition to any blues fan’s collection, especially if you like slide guitar and Chicago Blues.”–Graham Clarke, BluesBytes

Kirtan!

World
Kirtan
175 King St.
Chappaqua, NY   See Map
Kirtan is the practice of devotional singing to the Divine through the use of Sanskrit mantras. A form of ‘bhakti’ yoga (the yoga of devotion), this powerful, transformational spiritual practice is considered an easy path to liberation. Kirtan opens the heart, purifies the entire being and the surrounding atmosphere and stills the mind.

If you have never been to one, rest assured it is a solemn, holy experience that is also a ton of fun! If you like to sing, clap, bang on a percussion instrument, or are simply open to new ways to pay homage to your highest Self, your Being, the Divine Presence, God, Vishnu, or whatever signpost to the Ineffable you like to use, then we encourage you to come and give it a try.

Held every 3rd Thursday of the month!

Peekskill, NY   See Map
"Elegant yet raw, darkly emotional but also shot through with light, The Trapps new disc is full of surprising contrasts and casual beauty -- rangy, experimental roots-rock played with confidence and hope." - Jason Fine, Executive Editor, Rolling Stone Magazine

The Trapps are an American band that taps the roots of Americana, folk, and rock and roll, and wraps it all into a tightly-knit package that is entirely their own. Though their musical influences are far reaching, the greatest strength of the band is their commitment to the song - all at once they can grab you with powerful harmonies like the Jayhawks or rivet you with a high intensity jam like the Black Crowes. For The Trapps, the song is the law, and like the mountain climber, there are a great many ways to approach the ascent, but the thrill is to ultimately finish having learned something along the way.

Singer-Songwriter
Towne Crier Cafe
130 Route 22
Pawling, NY   See Map
Steve Katz studied guitar with Dave Van Ronk and the Reverend Gary Davis. There were many other young musicians around Greenwich Village during this time who were as obsessed with American roots music as Steve. Many would look for a common ground in which to play music together and they found the common ground in "jug band" music. Along with John Sebastian, Maria Muldaur, Stefan Grossman and David Grisman, Katz formed the Even Dozen Jug Band and recorded an album for Elektra in 1964. In 1965, Steve joined Danny Kalb in the Blues Project. They recorded three albums while together in their first incarnation. Steve then became a founding member of Blood, Sweat & Tears, which won three Grammys and sold millions of records worldwide. After BS&T, Steve went on to produce two Lou Reed albums, both of which went into Billboard's Top Ten. His last official band membership was with American Flyer in the mid-seventies.

[His] compositions are all strong and fresh, and they avoid being derivative. Best of all, they are tailor made to show off the trombonist’s lyricism and powerful chops..."

"A little folk, a little pop and more than a little magic!" --Keyboard Magazine Leslie Ritter’s lush tones and crystal clear melodic lines are the perfect counterpart to her partner Scott Petito’s evocative bass textures, polished guitar stylings and lovely keyboard arrangements. This gifted duo writes and delivers songs that soar, each crafted with lyrics that give a personal spin on universal themes: love and longing, that illusive balance between independence and inter-relatedness, sorrow, joy...life.

Christine Lavin's smart and funny take on contemporary life and foible make for a one-of-a-kind concert. As a songwriter, she brings the shrewd insight & wit of a humor columnist together with a novelist's eye for evocative details. While the title of her 19th solo album may sound like a disclaimer --I Don't Make This Stuff Up... I Just Make It Rhyme-- it is clear she's an expert on our days and our ways. Abundantly clever and unabashedly fond of a good laugh, she is fearless; opening her show to the audience in a way that ensures every concert is a one-off. Her music and her spontaneity are unequivocal departures from today's overly choreographed numbers and amped-up lyrics ...passing out recipes or goodie bags for people whose birthday falls during the holidays, drafting audience members onstage to join her for certain numbers and then improvising brilliant song ripostes as follow up.

If you've never seen the Blues Buddha, you're missing out on one of the most fun & exciting Blues acts in the Tri-State area. Blues Buddha's CD, "I Like It A Lot", (produced by Scott Stanton of Stoopid Daddy Records with Grammy winner Larry Alexander) continues to receive air time around the world, and rave reviews. Blues Underground Network writes, "Tommy doesn't ask you politely to get up and dance... once you hear his music, it will tear you off your seat and point your feet towards your best dancin' shoes."

Blues Buddha was a finalist for The NY Blues and Jazz Society IBC Battle of the Bands in 2010. The band includes Chip Lairson on guitar (who's performed with notable performers such as Dr. John, Maria Muldauer, Buddy Miles and more), Al Payson on bass (Grammy winner on his work with Jose Feliciano) and Tyger McNeil on drums and Pete DeHoff on keyboard.
