| My primary instrument is my voice, and my guitar embellishes, accompanies, and decorates it. My sound and style are my own. Exposure to music and vocal styles of all types, ranging from standards to jazz to folk/traditional to blues, and to the music of Great Britain, the Appalachian Mountains of Ohio, West Virginia, Virginia, and North Carolina, have influenced my sound and led me to describe my music as "eclectic acoustic." I have opened for Christine Lavin and Dave Cousins and performed in Showcases and the Open Mic Finals at the Towne Crier Cafe in Pawling, NY, and appeared in venues in the Hudson Valley and Southwestern CT. I perform a good mix of songs, including my own compositions, covers, and traditional music. I like to tell the stories of the traditional songs I sing and might focus on the song's provenance, themes, imagery, history, depiction of characters, etc. Listeners tell me that they enjoy learning about this traditional music. |

 The New Riders Of The Purple Sage, signed to Columbia Records by Clive Davis, released its eponymous first album in September 1971 to widespread acclaim. In the next 11 years the band toured and released over 12 albums, selling over 4 million records. NRPS began as a part-time spin-off from the Grateful Dead when Jerry Garcia (pedal steel guitar), Phil Lesh (bass) and Mickey Hart (drums) teamed up with John Dawson (guitar, vocals) and David Nelson (guitar). Although early live appearances were viewed as an informal warm-up to the main attraction, the group quickly established an independent identity through the strength of Dawson's original songs. By 1970 Dave Torbert had replaced Lesh, and Spencer Dryden, formerly of Jefferson Airplane, had joined as the group's permanent drummer. Garcia remained in both The Dead and The New Riders until he found himself over-committed, at which time Buddy Cage replaced him, and the classic NRPS lineup was born.

Whaley previously fronted NYC rock legend, The Niagaras. With a penchant for interpretive dancing on tabletops and hilariously satirical rants on a broken childhood, Whaley electrified national audiences with appearances on Good Morning America, the O Network and Fox. The Hudson Black Arts & Cultural Festival will host all day at the Henry Hudson Riverfront Park, there will be more music, food vendors, a talent show, and special presentations… all under a large tent with stage from 3:00 PM to sunset.
Sunday, August 14, there will be live music in participating restaurants, even more live performances in special tent venues, and the Hudson Black Arts & Cultural Festival will close the day, and entire weekend festival, with a special participatory Gospel presentation at the Henry Hudson Riverfront Park.

He wrote for Janis Joplin, Bonnie Raitt, The Doobie Brothers, Linda Ronstadt, Ricky Skaggs and James Taylor. John has also played guitar solos on records by Taj Mahal, Carly Simon and Little Feat.
