Houston Jones, 405
Americana, Folk/Traditional, and Bluegrass
Club Helsinki Hudson
405 Columbia Street
Hudson, NY   See Map
This quintet of musical veterans ignite the evening with their sizzling, eclectic mixture of originals and original interpretations of grassroots americana music. Houston Jones features the highwire left-handed upside down guitar wizardry of former Waybacks and Hearts on Fire guitarist Glenn Houston and the whiskey-cured honky tonk vocals of Louisiana-born Travis Jones. Add to the equation Chris Kee (Peter Rowan, Norah Jones, the Waybacks) on bass, cello, and guitar; Peter Tucker (formerly of the Waybacks) on percussion; and Henry Salvia (the Johnny Nocturne Band) on keyboards and accordion, and you have a group that can comfortably embrace musical styles from bluegrass, country, folk, and gospel to blues, Texas swing, and jazz, and barely break a sweat—unlike their audience.

Also appearing: The 405s.

Acoustic
BeanRunner Cafe
201 S. Division Street @ Esther
Peekskill, NY   See Map
Jon Herington and Rob Morsberger have been playing and recording each other's music since the mid-nineties.

Each has inspired and influenced the other. Along the way, Jon became guitarist and MD for Steely Dan and Madeleine Peyroux, with numerous other album and tour credits; and Rob became a busy arranger/composer with sideman credits that include Jim James (My Morning Jacket), Marshall Crenshaw, Crash Test Dummies and many more. At The Beanrunner these two good friends will perform as a duo, each accompanying the other. USA Today declared that Rob's recent album 'Chronicle of a Literal Man' was "sumptuous"...a "mix of wit and grit". Reviewing a Steely Dan concert, the Times of London wrote "...lead guitarist Jon Herington...was nothing short of sensational."

Jen Clapp

A former member of NY’s Native Tongue, Beacon’s own Jen Clapp was a key player in the early ’90’s folk-punk scene in the city, with a steady gig at the legendary Cafe Sin-é, the stomping grounds of a young Jeff Buckley. In 2009 she released her debut CD, Lonesome Sunbeam, to much critical acclaim. www.jenclapp.com

“She’s written songs with Chris Difford of Squeeze and Adam Levy of Norah Jones fame, so Clapp knows a thing or two or ten about songwriting. . . “ - Folk & Acoustic Music

Kelleigh McKenzie

Armed banjo, guitar, and stompbox, McKenzie’s "Gin" won the 2009 Independent Music Award (IMA) for Best Americana Song from her acclaimed debut, ‘Chances’. She received two additional IMA nominations (Best Americana Album and Best Cover Song for "Eleanor Rigby") and was named a winner in last year's Mountain Stage NewSong Contest.

“An embracing froth of roots, rock, Americana; and high, clear voice unafraid to tweak a melody” - Folk & Acoustic Music

Saugerties, NY   See Map
OPEN TO ALL LEVELS OF MUSICAL EXPERIENCE $75, including lunch

The workshop will be open to all who are interested regardless of musical experience, from those who are being exposed to harmonic singing for the first time to experienced practitioners who wish to immerse themselves at a deeper level. While the core of the workshop will be grounded in an earthy, practical approach to the voice, and in experiencing some of the more striking phenomena at the root of harmony, we will also discuss the simple yet profound mathematics of the overtone series and the foundation it provides for a deeper understanding of music. In addition, we will touch briefly on the light that a knowledge of harmonic singing sheds on the roots of language; correspondences with contemporary science; harmonic chant and listening as meditation; and its use in healing.

Dan Lavoie's unique guitar style began at the age of 12 in his hometown of Pawling, NY. His biggest influence at that point was his older brother Mikie. Dan would flip his brother's right handed guitar upside down like Jimmy Hendrix and play left handed. For several years Lavoie dove deep into the music of Jimmy Hendrix, Metallica, Phish, Chet Atkins, Jerry Garcia, Eddie Van Halen and many other artists having a big impact on his soloing techniques. After performing in many bands ranging from rock, funk/jam and metal, Lavoie enrolled in the Music Performance Program at Dutchess Community College receiving his MPC with Honors studying with classical guitarist Jeff Armstrong and was accepted to Berklee College of Music. In 2001 Dan decided to go solo and began recording his first instrumental album Little Noodles. He continued writing solo pieces throughout the years but began crafting songs about his life experiences.
