Pianist/ Composer Neil Alexander celebrates the forthcoming release of his 1st solo piano CD with a performance of his daring solo piano transcription of Igor Stravinsky’s “Rite of Spring (Sacre Du Printemps)” at the Falcon, opening for the String Trio of NY.
Originally written as an Orchestral ballet score, the striking dissonances and powerful rhythms of this monumental work caused a legendary riot at the 1911 premier in Paris. The work is considered to be the birth of 20th century classical music, and heralded new standards of rhythm and harmony, influencing music for generations.
After receiving a copy of the rehearsal score in 1982 (for 2 pianos / 4 hands), Neil became entranced with the piece and began restructuring it for 2 hands - a process that took approximately 15 years. He performed the piece several times a year from 1998 until 2002, and is performing it again several times this year including 2 performances for a Dance choreographed by Jonthan Reidel (May 13 & 14). Friday 7:30 pm to 10:30 pm | Phineas and the Lonely Leaves with Tim Feeney Acoustic, Pop/Soft Rock | BeanRunner Cafe 201 S. Division Street @ Esther Peekskill, NY See Map |
Phineas and the Lonely Leaves is a band which bares its sound with a reverence for simplicity. This band is a showcase for the evolution of Tim's songwriting ability which has matured into a concise, literal romantic vision. With little more than his voice, his hooks and an acoustic guitar he has managed to conjure a vibe that hints at a life full of secret struggles and recent triumphs. Nestled deep, somewhere between the vintage classic bleariness of Townes Van Zandt and Gram Parsons and contemporaries like Wilco, Death Cab for cutie, Bright Eyes, and Nada Surf, Phineas and the Lonely Leaves is the sound of a man finally realizing his gifts. Phineas and the Lonely Leaves provide a perfect soundtrack for those quiet midnight hours spent lying next to that one you love or sitting alone in the dark wondering whatever happened to that one who once owned your heart. They're taking the NYC music scene by storm! These four talented musicians fuse Alternative Rock with funky Blues "beneath smooth, smoke-and-whiskey vocals", creating a sound that is unique and exciting. They perform at top NYC venues like the Canal Room, the Bitter End and the National Underground, and we're privileged to welcome them back to 12 Grapes. The DBG features the multi-talented Drew Bordeaux on guitar, vocals and electric fiddle, Amanda Ruzza on bass/vocals, Matt Graff on drums and Alex Nolan on guitar. NY music reviewer Kevin Johnston wrote this about Drew: "When he sings, there are times when he gets so excited you think he's going to jump straight up and disappear... His guitar work is the real deal... A lot of players have forgotten what the rock solo is for, but Drew knows and he uses it to take the music to a new level. And just to make sure you stay interested, he switches to electric violin." Bam. **$10 Entertainment Fee or $5 with dinner entree** | ||

Eric Andersen is one of the most inspired singer-songwriters to emerge from the mid-1960s folk scene. In 1963, Andersen hitchhiked to San Francisco to seek out the poets of the Beat Generation. Tom Paxton discovered him there and invited him to New York City, where he was soon introduced to the Greenwich Village songwriting circle of Phil Ochs and Bob Dylan. Andersen was also greatly influenced by the blues and jazz greats he saw in Village clubs, including Mississippi John Hurt, Lightnin' Hopkins, Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, Doc Watson, John Coltrane and Miles Davis. It was here that Andersen began writing & recording the classic '60s folk songs Thirsty Boots, Violets Of Dawn and other classic '60s folk songs. Since then, Andersen has performed worldwide, and his songs have been recorded by artists including Judy Collins, Peter Paul and Mary, Linda Ronstadt and The Grateful Dead.
