Common Ground at South Presbyterian Church

Dobbs Ferry, NY   See Map
Celebrating her debut album, Lead Me Home, Jean Rohe is quickly becoming a gem of New York City’s jazz and Brazilian music scene. After winning both the audience favorite and second place award at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 2006, Jean assembled an unusual sextet, featuring accordion, clarinet, and South American percussion. The resulting project involves the full breadth of Jean’s stylistic attractions, challenging traditional boundaries around musical genres. Her original compositions and fresh arrangements of songs from Latin America explore the intersections of jazz, North American folk music, Brazilian and Afro-Peruvian traditions. Her singing and compositions have now filled venues from the Birdland to Havana’s Teatro Nacional.

Ian started playing drums at 6 years of age joined his first band at 14. By the time he finished high school. He was writing his own songs and playing in three different bands. Playing drums in one, singing in another and being the songwriter, vocalist, and guitarist in his first all original band. After spending due time in Los Angeles, Memphis, Nashville and New York City developing his songwriting chops, learning the ropes and working on his own sound by playing in a variety of bands from Garage/Alt-Country to Ambient and basic college rock from the 80's. Along the way, he discovered a melodic style which was from the first waves of rock-n-roll, traditional country, Delta blues, Rhythm-n-Blues and Folk. There was a distinct power to a simple melody with a powerful lyric. He made his way through Memphis again. But, this time as a solo performer. He wanted to feel the rhythm of the area. He indulged deeply in the musical history of the region, The "crossroads".

Although it's been 10 years since his passing, the music of George Harrison lives on.

Known as "the quiet Beatle", Harrison was only 15 when he joined the group and, although Lennon and McCartney were "the" songwriters, George wrote some of the most legendary Beatle's songs of all time: "Something", "Here Comes the Sun", "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" and "Taxman" to name a few. It was Harrison who first embraced Indian mysticism in the mid 60's, bringing to pop culture the sound of sitar music. His 1971 "Concert for Bangladesh" with Ravi Shankar was the first benefit concert of this magnitude in world history. With 11 solo albums to his name, George left behind an impressive legacy as a solo artist. He was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2004.

The evening will be hosted by singer/songwriter Steve Chizmadia, and will feature Julie Corbalis, Chris Corbalis, Eric Puente, Paul Silverman, Seth Slater and other friends.

With a whirlwind of instrumental style & repertoire fusing classical, rock, blues, jazz and bluegrass --as well as the quintessential California musical genre, surf music-- the California Guitar Trio's stunning virtuosity and sly sense of humor have earned them the title "the world's greatest acoustic band." [-Guitar Shop Magazine] Worldwide, wildly enthusiastic crowds have responded to their mind-blowing musicianship and unabashed emphasis on good fun with standing ovations. A list of the trio's personnel makes the source of their dynamic mix no wonder: Bert Lams (Belgium), a classically trained graduate of the Royal Conservatory in Brussels; Paul Richards (USA), the resident rocker and guitar effects aficionado; and Hideyo Moriya (Japan), surf guitar specialist. Acoustic Guitar Magazine says "The CGT will knock your socks off. The tight ensemble creates sounds that range from raindrop pointillism to a three-ton harpsichord gone berserk!"

Dan Lavoie's unique guitar style began at the age of 12 in his hometown of Pawling, NY. His biggest influence at that point was his older brother Mikie. Dan would flip his brother's right handed guitar upside down like Jimmy Hendrix and play left handed. After performing in many bands ranging from rock, funk/jam and metal, Lavoie enrolled in the Music Performance Program at Dutchess Community College receiving his MPC with Honors studying with classical guitarist Jeff Armstrong and was accepted to Berklee College of Music. In 2001 Dan decided to go solo and began recording his first instrumental album Little Noodles. He continued writing solo pieces throughout the years but began crafting songs about his life experiences. He traveled with a former bandmate of Makeshift Mountains performing around Europe in 2007.
