Berries & Blues
with Ray Blue (sax)
Jazz
BeanRunner Cafe
201 S. Division Street @ Esther
Peekskill, NY   See Map
"The highlight September performance in Paris was tenor saxophonist Ray Blue. This former member of Sun Ra's Arkestra and student of Ornette Coleman set the Caveau des Oubliettes on fire...His music was fresh and captured the mind without straying away too long from the strongest groove." Downbeat Magazine

Ray's newest CD, "Berries and Blues" serves you the fruits of his music-a story is told by merging jazz, blues and African folk rhythms. The players chosen for this project are brilliant musicians who came together on the gig in Paris, with a chemistry and sound that was nothing less than exceptional.

Ray has preformed with Steve Turre, Eddie Henderson, Gary Bartz, T.K. Blue, Bob Gaddy, Wycliff Gordon and Benny Powell. He plays with The Spirit of Life Ensemble and tours with The Ray Charles Show.

The Ray Blue Sound is at once big and warm, dynamic and romantic, nostalgic and modern. It's "Blue Jazz".

Rob's latest album, 'The Chronicle of A Literal Man', was recently featured on NPR and received raves in USA Today, The Boston Globe and Herald, and more. Writing in the Herald, renowned rock critic Don Convey stated that the "album is the kind of hyperliterate, pop-inflected singer-songwriter outing that went out of style when Warren Zevon died. And...he can write a hook that could make angels weep." His sideman credits include Jules Shear, Loudon Wainwright III, Dan Zanes, The Roches, Crash Test Dummies and Marshall Crenshaw. He is composer for the award-winning PBS series NOVAscienceNOW, currently in its fifth season.

Rob will perform at The BeanRunner Cafe with his longtime collaborator, guitarist Jon Herington (Steely Dan, Madeleine Peyroux).

Doors open for open mic sign-up and refreshments at 7 p.m. Admission is $5 ($4 for Folk Guild members). Steve Warner paints vivid pictures of people and places. His songs are spiced with humor, emotion and color that conjures up writers like John Prine and Steve Goodman. His lyrical word play can intrigue and inspire, make you laugh, and sometimes cry. The PMQ begins 3rd year at Peint O Gwrw
with The Paul Miller Quartet
SNARF
Peint O Gwrw
36 Main Street
Chatham, NY   See Map
Chatham's Peint O Gwrw will feature once again the sound of sublime harmonic & rhythmic invention when for the 3rd year in a row, the PMQ takes the bandstand once (sometimes twice) a month to guide listeners through a reflective musical excursion at just the right volume and intensity to match the evening's own dynamics. The band's SNARF-driven performance will be, as always, there to give your soul what it needs to feel complete. Knowing that musical genius only survives if allowed to grow, the band is courageously meeting the challenge, using Paul Reed's cymbals as the plow to turn the nutrient-rich soil of Eric Miller's vibrating bass strings, in order to nurture the sonic landscape of Paul Trap's "guitartistry". Upon hearing this, Paul Miller himself, in a rare public statement, commented "What? Huh? Did you say 'guitartistry'? I like that! It's good, very good!"
