Travel Through the History of Jazz: Part 2--The Jazz Age: Swing is the Thing

Fred Smith, former musical director for the Harlem Blues & Jazz Band, is taking us for a trip through the history of jazz. For the second of this three-part series, Fred, and his accomplished group of musicians, will light up the night with Swing.

At the same time, we will help Fred to celebrate his birthday in style. Smooth Jazz, Blues and Swing Style. Don't miss it.

Fred is the trumpeter of choice for many main line Swing groups through the years from drummer Panam Francis' Big Band and George Kelly's Jazz Sultans to the Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Orchestra. He has also played with Dr. Lonnie Smith, Bross Townsend, Lou Donaldson, Houston Person, Alvin Queen, Joey Caldorrza, King Curtis, Lloyd Price, Bernard Purdie and Hugh Masakela and with singers Etta James, Della Griffin and Annette St. John.

A lot of singer-songwriters are whitebread. Sloan is whole grain.” WFMT Radio, Rich Warren

” …earth mother voice that she pours into unexpectedly sensitive blends of folk, jazz, blues and funk.” The New York Times

Folk-pop artist Sloan Wainwright belongs to a musical dynasty of impossibly gifted singer-songwriters. Her family tree (brother and folk-music luminary Loudon Wainwright, sister-in-law Kate McGarrigle, nephew Rufus Wainwright, nieces Martha Wainwright and Lucy Wainwright Roche) reads like a who’s who of contemporary folk music. Sloan’s incredible gift is not only her unique songwriting ability but her dramatically voiced rendition of her original songs.

Sloan demonstrates easy command of a variety of American musical styles — pop, folk, jazz and blues — held together by the melodious tone of her rich contralto. Join us for this special evening at Common Ground. Opening the show will be yet another talented member of the family -- her son Sam McTavey.

New York-based folk-pop trio, The YaYas, are celebrating the release of their new CD, Paper Boats! Known for fun, informal shows during which they talk and joke around with each other and the audience, their spirit is contagious. Catherine Miles' rich, expressive voice is intimate & honest, Jay Mafale's percussive guitar and Paul Silverman's melodic piano lines complement each other, and all three blend in a way that reflects their friendship as well as years of playing together. The songs on Paper Boats are told through plainspoken lyrics with catchy choruses that stick with you. Since this is a party, The YaYas will be joined onstage by friends Steve Kirkman, Fred Gillen Jr. and Eric Puente -- incredible musicians who can be heard throughout the new album.
