Sing Out!
with Bar Scott
Omega Institute
Rhinebeck , NY   See Map
A 5-day workshop for singers and people who would like to sing more or know more about how to sing. The focus will be on fun, safety, comfort and somehow learning how to stand up and sing with others or, for those who wish to, and I hope you do, in front of others. We'll do a lot of stretching (a la gentle yoga) for enhanced breathing and simply because it feels good. We'll sing in groups small and large. We'll listen a lot and sing a lot. Eat a lot, walk a lot, sleep a lot and we'll get to know each other well. It's always great at Omega, so if you can take a week off, I hope you'll join me.

More information will be in the Omega catalogue early in 2010. To contact me directly about it, please use the email form under the "Contact" link from my home page.

TONY TRISCHKA, also TIM ERIKSEN
Acoustic, Roots Music
Towne Crier Cafe
130 Route 22
Pawling, NY   See Map
Tony Trischka is perhaps the most influential banjo player in the roots music world. For more than 35 years, Tony's stylings have inspired a whole generation of bluegrass and acoustic musicians, including Bela Fleck - one of his early students. It's likely you've already enjoyed his playing - on the soundtrack of Driving Miss Daisy, on Garrison Keillor's Prairie Home Companion, Mountain Stage or any of a number of other places his inventive work has appeared over the years.

Fans of hardcore Americana singer/multi-instrumentalist TIM ERIKSEN ("Cordelia's Dad" band; "Cold Mountain" soundtrack) know him for his hair-raising voice and intense renditions of ancient American songs. Hailed as "among the world's finest folk practitioners" (-Toronto Star), Tim's sound is a tightrope walk balancing tradition and innovation, as becomes someone who has shared the stage with both Doc Watson and Kurt Cobain, and recorded with both Ralph Stanley and Jack White.

Taste Budd's Chocolate and Coffee Cafe
40 West Market Street
Red Hook, NY   See Map
From the Hudson and the Catskills, to the rural South, by way of the big clipper ships, the far east and the British Isles, Bob Lusk's songs encompass the whole world and hundreds of songs.

A veteran of both the Irish and American folk circuit, Bob is an experienced balladeer and multi-instrumentalist. He sings in a strong baritone, from rousing "pub song" favorites to tender love songs and accompanies himself on guitar, cittern, banjo, and button accordion.

Like the minstrels of old, he performs songs that weave a tale of people’s history. His songs also reflect a strong social conscience and a lifetime of working for peace, justice and social action. He is a long time member of the Hudson Valley Folk Guild, and a former staff member of Sing Out! Magazine, the country’s premier folk music magazine.

The song takes you on a journey through The Bronx from the year 1641 through the present, mostly through the lens of a pair of 20th century corner candy store owners and the well-known Bronxites who may very well have passed through the store, including Babe Ruth, Fats Waller, The Great Houdini and Bobby Darin, not to mention Dad, Parkees, and The Fordham Baldies. You need not be from The Bronx to enjoy listening to these open mic stories and songs. Admission includes FREE CD, $15 in Advance, $17 at door. Unique Bronx merchandise available. Your favorite trio is now the Paul Miller Quartet. We're still a three piece band, we just needed a new name, and this one fits. Who is Paul Miller? An excellent question! We're working on an answer. Why "quartet" when we are a trio? Here's the current answer to that question, and it's a pretty good one (existentially speaking, that is). The fourth member is you, the listener. If there are a room full of listeners, then the whole room is potentially the fourth member. Remember the old rhetorical question, "If a tree falls in the forest and there's nobody there to hear it, is there a sound?" Well, I think it has something to do with that line of thinking. Maybe not. Give us another couple of weeks on that, we'll get back to you!
