A Bluegrass Band from Alaska
with Bearfoot
Bluegrass, Americana
St. John's Episcopal Church
207 Albany Avenue
Kingston, NY   See Map
KINGSTON, N.Y., April 26, 2010: Bluegrass music from Alaska may sound like a bit of a non sequitur, but Telluride Band Contest winner BEARFOOT is proving that the two aren't as unrelated as you might think. Bearfoot’s rise from über-talented music camp counselors to an established national touring band has been nothing short of meteoric. Their fresh approach to acoustic music features twin fiddles, fast-picking mandolin and guitar, upright bass, and beautiful harmony vocals. Whether performing their original Americana/bluegrass songs, freshly arranged traditionals, or covers of contemporary tunes, Bearfoot's exuberant stage presence elicits an appeal that bridges generations.

“It bounces, it swings, it dives head-first into minor keys and unexpected (but totally workable) phrasings. In other words, it's very cool. -Bluegrass Unlimited

Tickets are $12 in advance, $15 at the door. St. John's Church is located at 207 Albany Avenue in Kingston, New York.

CHRISTINE LAVIN, also BUSKIN & BATTEAU
Acoustic, Folk/Traditional, and Comedic
Towne Crier Cafe
130 Route 22
Pawling, NY   See Map
Christine Lavin’s smart and funny take on contemporary life and foible make for a one-of-a-kind concert. As a songwriter, she brings the shrewd insight & wit of a humor columnist together with a novelist's eye for evocative details. Her music and her spontaneity are unequivocal departures from today’s overly choreographed numbers and amped-up lyrics ...passing out recipes or goodie bags for people whose birthday falls during the holidays, drafting audience members onstage to join her for certain numbers and then improvising brilliant song ripostes as follow up.

After a thirteen-year hiatus to 1) be dads, and 2) take a nap, BUSKIN & BATTEAU are back on the road again! They continue to offer their audiences "an irresistible amalgam of melodic, sensual pop, folkie grit and killer wit." -Washington Post. "...Versatile, sophisticated...by turns acerbic, funny and plaintive. Buskin and Batteau are breathing new life into the genre of the folk-pop singer/songwriter." - The NY Times

Fans of Rhonda Denet, make your reservations early...the Rhonda Denet Project is back!

Described as a virtuoso who lends her vocal flair to every song she sings, Rhonda is a soulfully gifted singer whose influences range from Jazz to R&B to 80's standards, and she even adds her own inspirational ballads. With a repertoire that spans from Ella Fitzgerald, Etta James and Anita Baker to Stevie Wonder to the pop band Journey, Rhonda puts a soulful spin on everything she sings, with a voice that will take your breath away.

The Rhonda Denét Project includes the "vocal pyrotechnics" of Miss Rhonda Denet along with Dave McDowell on sax and flute, Daniel Muniz on guitar, Derrick Scott on bass and Chuck Batton on drums.

Break out of the box, or just get out of that rut, with your songwriting! All types of guitars and basses are addressed, and all levels of players are welcome.

This time around, the workshop will take us through playing an instrumental song from start to finish. You will be encouraged to start from scratch with your very own song, or play an old standby in a new way... or learn to play "Solomon."

Peekskill, NY   See Map
Combine Barry White, Teddy Pendergrass and James Brown, and you get LA's signature style - "old school romance" and fiery funk! His unique registry, being a bass/baritone singer, brings passion and fire to the romantic songs that are an important part of his musical experience.

The fervor and spiritual connections felt by his audiences is matched only by his ability to become "one" with his soulful, heart pounding funk. A celebratory aura is seen in his outlook on life and is evident in his performances.

LA has performed with the legendary Intruders as well as on many "Motown Review" assignments. He is currently the bass/ baritone singer and co-founder of "Tradition", a wonderful "classic soul" cover singing group.

LA has been a radio personality on his own "Quite Storm" show on 91.1 WOSS in New York and has been seen in commercials, and on documentaries for public and commercial television.

The Poughkeepsie Chapter of the Hudson Valley Folk Guild continues its 2009-2010 coffeehouse series on Saturday, May 15, 2010, at the Unitarian Fellowship, South Randolph Ave., Poughkeepsie. The coffeehouse performances start at 7:30 pm with an open mic format followed by the featured performer, Melissa Holland.

Melissa Holland is a singer/songwriter, flutist, and keyboardist. In each song she tells a story - reflecting personal growth and change and evoking empathy, images and pathos.

She does this with confessional, conversational and often humorous lyrics.

Her style is a mixture of pop, folk, classical, sometimes even jazz and country; She has been compared style-wise to Carol King and Laura Nyro. Her voice is reminiscent of Joni Mitchell and Judy Collins: clear, honest and flexible; both ethereal and down to earth, as she puts it, "head in the clouds, feet on the ground".

Through the years, Jeffrey Gaines has built an emotional and trusting bond with his fans, and admits that they have sustained him from the start. Even when he was between record companies, it was his fans that propelled his live version of Peter Gabriel's "In Your Eyes" to the top of several major radio stations' charts. Growing up in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, Jeffrey's parents were constantly playing records by Otis Redding, Aretha Franklin and Gladys Knight & The Pips. Gaines found that music gave him the opportunity to transcend his quiet nature. "Being kind of shy, I wanted to put myself in a position to communicate to as many people as I could once I had my thoughts together." After amassing a fervent live following, he landed a record deal in the early '90s, which resulted in three critically-acclaimed albums. He has made appearances from Conan O'Brien to Good Morning America.

ELLIS PAUL, also special guest KATI MAC
Acoustic, Singer-Songwriter
Towne Crier Cafe
130 Route 22
Pawling, NY   See Map
Ellis Paul is one of the leading voices in American songwriting. He was a principle leader in the wave of singer/songwriters that emerged from the Boston folk scene, creating a movement that revitalized the national acoustic circuit with an urban, literate, folk pop style that helped renew interest in the genre in the 1990s. Ellis' charismatic, personally authentic performance style has influenced a generation of artists away from the artifice of pop, and closer towards the realness of folk. Though he remains among the most pop-friendly of today's singer-songwriters - his songs regularly appear in hit movie and TV soundtracks - he has bridged the gulf between the modern folk sound and the populist traditions of Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger more successfully than perhaps any of his songwriting peers.

Rescheduled from April...The effervescent Melinda DiMaio joins us this time around. To describe her eclectic musical style Melinda has coined the phrase "JaFoCo”. Her music fuses elements of jazz, folk, and country. With a vocal quality that draws from a rich palette of shades and hues, DiMaio’s sound has been described as Patsy Cline meets Joni Mitchell. We'll put Melinda in the Lo-Fi Blender and see what happens. I have a feeling it's gonna be mighty cool.
