Etienne Charles' Quartet, James Shipp (percussion and vibraphone), Ben Williams (bass), John Davis (drums)
Jazz
BeanRunner Cafe
201 S. Division Street @ Esther
Peekskill, NY   See Map
Born in Trinidad, Etienne Charles' music is distinctly influenced by the sounds of calypso, steel pan, and African Shango drumming.

A critically acclaimed trumpeter, Charles plays a jazz griot, reflecting sounds of the past and sounds of place. Mixing jazz with Afro-Cuban and calypso styles, Charles' sophomore album, Folklore, illustrates the crossroads culture of the Caribbean. Folklore tells of the folk characters in his native Trinidad through the 26-year-old's wholly original compositions. According to legend, Douens are the lost souls of young children (they can be seen in the forest with their floppy hats, featureless faces and backwards feet). "Mama D'lo" (Mother of the Water) reflects a Caribbean take on the mermaid as protector of the sea. On Folklore, Charles brings those stories to life with a skill that won him the 2006 National Trumpet Competition.

Another "Raising the Bar" Production by Earl John Powell.

Currently a solo singer/guitarist/songwriter, background in jazz, blues and country. Studied voice in Los Angeles with Susan Strietwieser and in New York with Janie Barnett; guitar in Los Angeles with Gary Mandell of Boulevard Music and in New York with highly regarded New York session player Matt Smith. I am heavily influenced by Americana/alt-country music ie Townes van Zandt and Guy Clark and perform my own songs at small venues around NYC. I have recently been getting radio airplay on Americana/country radio; my song "Alley Cat" has been on the Redbud Radio Hour on WICR 88.7 in Indianapolis. My early band experience was primarily blues, which I found was tremendously helpful in terms of learning the guitar, as well as figuring out how to work with the bass and drums to form a singular sound. Since 2003 I have attended Pat Wictor's biweekly songwriting circles here in New York. My goal, rarely achieved, is to write one song every week!

Peekskill, NY   See Map
When separate components come together to make a powerful reaction, a bigger reaction than that made by their individual parts, you have witnessed the principle of fusion—Richie Goods and Nuclear Fusion are the embodiment of that principle in action. These musicians, each highly accomplished in their own rite, are a perfect mix of talent and energy, igniting the stage and exciting the audience in one beautiful chain reaction.

Richie Goods is a master musician whose tenure with many of music’s greatest names clearly as worn off on him as a leader – his candor to the audience, his approach in developing a set list, and most of all his bass playing are all top of the line…If you get the chance to catch this group do yourself a favor and do so.~Christopher Lams, Jazz Improv NY

Towne Crier Cafe
130 Route 22
Pawling, NY   See Map
Eilen Jewell's songs come on like the nakedness of a thunderstorm after a sultry day: "You show me the well, but you don't let me drink." When she hisses that she's "Too Hot to Sleep," you know she ain't talking about the weather, and you know exactly why she's "going some place where they never say your name." Her stage presence and the easy slide of her voice suggest the lifetime experience of a country torch singer from the '40s, having another go 'round in a fresh, new life. Eilen's heart-achingly hushed style and intimate grasp of roots music's wild graces are set to a swaying, irrepressible groove by her band, evoking classic country, folk and swing without feeling nostalgic.

My primary instrument is my voice, and my guitar embellishes, accompanies, and decorates it. My sound and style are my own. Exposure to music and vocal styles of all types, ranging from standards to jazz to folk/traditional to blues, and to the music of Great Britain, the Appalachian Mountains of Ohio, West Virginia, Virginia, and North Carolina, have influenced my sound and led me to describe my music as "eclectic acoustic." I have opened for Christine Lavin and Dave Cousins and performed in Showcases and the Open Mic Finals at the Towne Crier Cafe in Pawling, NY, and appeared in venues in the Hudson Valley and Southwestern CT. I perform a good mix of songs, including my own compositions, covers, and traditional music. I like to tell the stories of the traditional songs I sing and might focus on the song's provenance, themes, imagery, history, depiction of characters, etc. Listeners tell me that they enjoy learning about this traditional music.

Bill Kelly -- aka "Mr. Americana" -- is songwriter and all-around great guy. Whether on acoustic guitar or mandola (or is it a mandolin?) Bill's charm and charisma on stage make all his performances enjoyable. On his CD, "Bread on the Waters", Bill "takes a long hard pull on the bottle of life, with weather-beaten songs of messed-up love, longing, and redemption." His song "Seraphima" is a tune that's been applauded by critics and "She's Single Again" was featured in NBC's TV show, Ed. But our favorite has to be "A Bottle of Wine Don't Last Too Long 'Round Here". Could be our theme song.

Join us for dinner or a glass (or bottle) of wine on the couches as we welcome Bill Kelly back to our 12 Grapes stage.

Blues Party
with Big Joe Fitz, Melinda DiMaio
Blues, Dance, and Jazz
High Falls Cafe
Route 213
High Falls, NY   See Map
The effervescent Melinda DiMaio joins us this time around. To describe her eclectic musical style Melinda has coined the phrase "JaFoCo”. Her music fuses elements of jazz, folk, and country. With a vocal quality that draws from a rich palette of shades and hues, DiMaio’s sound has been described as Patsy Cline meets Joni Mitchell. We'll put Melinda in the Lo-Fi Blender and see what happens. I have a feeling it's gonna be mighty cool.

A rare Wednesday night at the Cafe...

Mary Gauthier is one of the most challenging artists to rise up from the underground in a long, long time; writing songs that tell hard truths with a desolate eloquence. Gauthier's path has wound through devastation and despair. She has beaten back demons, learned from the streets, sunk to the bottom of life, turned 18 behind bars, emerged from darkness... and to completely confuse things, won notice as a respected restaurateur... all before writing her first song.
