Saturday 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm | Before They Disappeared from the Farm with Artist's reception for Elana Goren | BeanRunner Cafe 201 S. Division Street @ Esther Peekskill, NY See Map |
Elana Goren's art creates a visual story that compels the viewer to look beyond the obvious and delve into the reality of a subject's situation, and reveals the innate character of the individual. Her newest exhibit, Before they Disappeared from the Farm, is a visual mastery in both technique and emotion and will show at the BRC Gallery in Peekskill from Sunday September 27 through November 14, 2009. Artist's reception on Sat, Oct 3, 3-6 pm. Goren's work exists in a variety of mediums including oil paintings as well as charcoal and pastel drawings but more recently she has worked predominantly in printmaking, specifically etching. In Goren's hands, the lush quality of ink pressed into the paper's surface is wide ranging from delicate fine lines to strong solid masses of black. Her use of an experimental and unique aquatint technique that she has developed gives a soft, yet moody quality that contrasts nicely with the precision of the traditionally etched lines.

Mose Allison has created a musical territory all his own, wrapping complex piano improvisations around vocals that are at once low-key and red-hot. This Mississippi-born musician and composer names Duke Ellington, Thelonius Monk, and John Lee Hooker among his influences, but today's younger pop stars salute his impact on their own work. Mose has recorded more than 20 albums, and his sets feature classic blues and jazz standards as well as his own material. Mose continues to win new fans of every generation. Robert Palmer of the New York Times says that Mose Allison's music "defies description because it cuts across the boundaries that conventionally separate mainstream jazz, the avant-garde, blues & swing, and because it is in a continuing process of evolution." Through it all, Mose remains highly accessible, witty, and entertaining. It is a privilege to bring him to our stage again. More info at the Towne Crier Cafe

Sunday 8:00 pm | Brad Vickers & His Vestapolitans Blues | Alchemy of Woodstock 297 Tinker Street Woodstock, NY See Map |
"Brad Vickers may be known to some from his recordings with Pinetop Perkins, Hubert Sumlin, or Little Mike & The Tornadoes; or maybe you've been lucky enough to catch his shows. He tunes his guitar in "Vestapol", hence the band name—and what a band! Sax and clarinet master Jim Davis (Hubert Sumlin, Paul Oscher) adds an old-fashioned jazzy feel, drummer Barry Harrison is best known for his work with Johnny and Shemekia Copeland—which speaks for itself—and bassist and sometime fiddler and singer Margey Peters is a familiar name to New York blues watchers (both she and Barry play with Big Frank & The Healers). Special guest the up-and-coming Dave Gross supplies guitar and upright bass, too, but this is Brad's album, as he turns in excellent slide guitar numbers (occasionally tending towards the Hawaiian, or on "I'm Homesick", guess who?), skiffle, hokum and/or ragtime-styled tunes, or fine down-home blues. A very distinctive and appealing sound."

Friday 9:00 pm | CHERISH THE LADIES Celtic | Towne Crier Cafe 130 Route 22 Pawling, NY See Map |
When describing Cherish The Ladies (taken from the name of a traditional Irish jig), the critics say it best: "It is simply impossible to imagine an audience that wouldn't enjoy what they do" (Boston Globe); "An astonishing array of virtuosity" (Washington Post); "Expands the annals of Irish music in America...the music is passionate, tender and rambunctious" (New York Times). For the past eighteen years, Cherish the Ladies have proven themselves worthy of these accolades, growing from a one-time concert concept, featuring the brightest lights in Irish traditional music, to the most successful and sought-after Irish-American group in Celtic music. This powerhouse group combines all the facets of Irish traditional culture – especially the knack for humor – and puts it forth in an immensely entertaining package. They also have been fortunate to have Gary Brooks sit in with them for the last few gigs on keys and sax. Recently, someone at a club said to them "You guys sound like a freight train in a hurricane!" That pretty much sums it up. They have been playing clubs throughout the Hudson Valley for a few years now bringing their unique music style that is refreshing and long overdue.
