Nerissa and Katryna Nields
Folk/Traditional, Singer-Songwriter, and Americana
Common Ground Coffeehouse
25 Old Jackson Avenue
Hastings-on-Hudson, NY   See Map
Sisters Nerissa and Katryna have been singing together since they were children. After college in Connecticut (Nerissa went to Yale and Katryna went to Trinity), the Nields launched their music career in the New England coffeehouse folk circuit. By 1995, they had put together a five-piece folk-rock band and started touring nationally as "The Nields." Between 1994 and 2000, the Nields released six full length CDs, with tour dates all over North America, playing well over 200 dates a year. In 1998, the Nields separated from the band when they were asked to play the Lilith Fair without the men in their band. Their latest record, Sister Holler, is a "roots album," but with a difference. Rather than simply reinterpret or re-record the music what brung 'em, the sisters have decided to retool, assimilate and flat out burgle the music they grew up with to create something new. The result is a delightful oxymoron of songs simultaneously familiar and surprising.

Mixing gospel, jazz, and rhythm/blues, she has sang with Louis Armstrong, BB King, Aretha, Brubeck, Ruth Brown, Paul Anka, Sam Cooke, & many more… Rene Bailey started singing gospel as a kid in her Georgia church. Moving to NYC, she hit the scene where she sang blues & jazz. The transition from gospel to nightclub work came naturally, & Rene became the vocalist at Peg Leg Bates' Club for 20 years. In church it's called "shouting"-the gospel dance. "They get up and shout & shout." In a club when Rene Bailey sings and "it" hits, you yell, "Yes, indeed!

It's A New Year
a great night to help bring
A New Beginning
to two local families

Matthew Germann, the son of Kristy and Michael Germann, a volunteer firefighter in Sullivan county, is a one year old boy who was diagnosed with Infantile Spasm Disorder at the age of 5 months. This rare disorder affects 5 in every 10,000 babies. Matthew was hospitalized for a month and underwent a harsh treatment plan which failed. The family has tried numerous medications which have not been successful in reducing Matthew's spasms. They are now trying a medication from Canada, which has not received approval in the U.S. and is not covered under the family's medical insurance. It now appears that Matthew will need brain surgery to help control this disorder.

Bruce Smith, a lifelong Orange county resident will be receiving his second kidney transplant. Family friend Linda Coleman donated the first transplanted kidney which served Bruce well for 10 good years. Recently, dialysis has become difficult so a second kidney will be donated by Bruce's son, Derek, a medical match - in 1998 Derek was too young. A rare recipient from two living donors, Bruce's insurance does not cover expenses associated with the operation (or Derek's loss of work).

Singer/Songwriter Showcase

Singer-Songwriter
12 Grapes Music & Wine Bar
12 North Division Street
Peekskill, NY   See Map
Three acoustic performers take their turn on stage in 30-minute sets, twice around.

This evening, we are pleased to present soloists: Cassandra Frake, Lisa Frieder (pictured here) and Scott Seltzer.

Cassandra has a beautiful, soothing voice and a soft touch on acoustic guitar. Hear her on lohud.com's listening room. They say she "has a voice like Jewel with a touch of Jazz."

Lisa's vocals go from soft to powerful; her lyrics are filled with angst, hope and wisdom. Her original song repertoire is seemingly endless. We love when she sings "Fire and Water"...hear it on her myspace.

Scott returns to 12 Grapes with his great voice and solid guitar work. His voice is strong and moving.

Come join us for a relaxing evening with some of the area's best acoustic performers.

Geoff Hartwell is an accomplished slide-guitarist. In 2007 he taught a seminar called “Sounds of the Slide Guitar Masters” with special guests Sonny Landreth and Cindy Cashdollar in Austin. This led to a sold-out show in New York with the Geoff Hartwell Band and Sonny Landreth performing together. With the release of his CD, "Perfect Stranger" Geoff Hartwell has "distinguished himself as an up and coming musician and songwriter with some serious slide guitar chops." (MORE SUGAR Magazine). Geoff and his band will blow you away with their repertoire of classic rock songs and outstanding originals.
