US based Australian musician Geoff Achison has a reputation as a guitarist's guitarist. Equally adept at acoustic or electric styles, either choice can be beautifully intricate or feature high energy explosiveness. He has developed his own sound, without the aid of pedals or gadgets, and fans even say that you can recognise an Achison riff when you hear it. As a vocalist, Geoff possesses a rich, soulful voice that evokes favourable comparisons to Joe Cocker, Warren Haynes or Paul Weller. Add to this his award winning songwriting skills and you have the whole package. He has toured regularly around the globe and won honours on 3 continents. Years of touring, recording and performing has seen him share stages and open shows with such high calibre artists as Jorma Kaukonen & Hot Tuna, John Mayall, Clarence 'Gatemouth' Brown, Hubert Sumlin, Levon Helm and John Mayer as well as top Aussies 'Dutch' Tilders, Phil Manning, Jeff Lang and Tommy Emmanuel. / Opening the show: John Reddan.

PRESS QUOTES
NATIONAL PUBLIC RADIO: [Smither] taps his foot to keep the rhythm, much like the late blues legend John Lee Hooker. His finger-picked guitar lines are sleek, unhurried and insistent. And then there's the voice – equal parts gravel and molasses, Smither's singing sounds like a distillation of the folk and blues heroes he grew up listening to in New Orleans.
ROLLING STONE: Bathed in the flickering glow of passing headlights and neon bar signs, Smither's roots are as blue as they come. There is plenty of misty Louisiana and Lightnin' Hopkins in Smither's weathered singing and unhurried picking. So fine.
GUITAR MAGAZINE: His penchant for lyricism sometimes makes it easy to overlook his Delta-inspired guitar chops, which boast a strong rhythmic sense and a beautiful, fluid, fingerpicking style.
NEW YORK TIMES: Through the decades, Mr. Smither has taken the blues in a direction entirely his own: stoic existential ruminations sung in a pained, weathered moan and set to quietly virtuosic guitar. There was always unpretentious philosophy in the deep blues, and Mr. Smither has followed it toward his own quiet epiphanies.
WASHINGTON POST: (Smither)'s one of the finest interpreters of classic blues and contemporary roots music on the scene today.
SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE: Smither continues to give ample proof that he's matured into one of roots music's most passionate, soulful songsmiths and interpreters. He has the perfect husky, country-music voice, and he keeps the tunes clipping with crisp acoustic picking.
CHICAGO TRIBUNE: Sitting all evening in a wooden chair, blue acoustic guitar cradled in his lap, feet miked to amplify him stamping out the beat, Smither coupled a firm grasp of nuance with understated, focused energy. Smither's quiet intensity made itself felt most of all in his dazzling guitar picking.
BOSTON GLOBE: (Smither) is among the finest acoustic guitarists anywhere in American music (Bonnie Raitt calls him "my Eric Clapton"), and his songs, while banked in the blues, are as modern as tomorrow's newspaper.

Alex Turnquist and friend
Acoustic
60 Main
60 Main St.
New Paltz, NY   See Map
Based on his debut album, Alexander Turnquist is that rarity, a young solo acoustic guitarist whose work bears no audible influence by John Fahey. Faint at the Loudest Hour has a faint raga feel, sometimes akin to solo albums by ex-Sun City Girls stalwart Sir Richard Bishop, and at times it descends into mere hypnotic prettiness in the manner of first-generation Windham Hill artists like Alex de Grassi and Michael Hedges. But Turnquist cleverly adds other textures and instruments to his playing, subtly enough to keep them from sounding intrusive, but with just enough presence to change the dynamics of what would be just another solo acoustic guitar record. Closing track "As the Sun Sets, We Think of Days to Come" is the highlight in this regard, with Turnquist's effortlessly flowing, cyclical guitar figures meshing perfectly with the repeated tumbling piano figure in the background.

New York Funk Alliance was scheduled to make a rare local appearance bringing what was guaranteed to be the party event of the season. Check this calendar for re-scheduled performances.

This band SIZZLES all on their own, but many accomplished world travelled musicians support NYFA (the alliance), so you never know who's gonna join the core group on stage ~ you'll get your groove on, or simply treat yourself to a great show every time they step on stage!

Core players are Michael Schirmer (fmr. Ani DeFranco and Mercury Rev member) on Keys ~ Ricky Woodard (The Razor Crooner) on guitar, vocals and keys ~ Alana "Duchess of Funk" Orr on Bass & vocals (also plays w/Van Hunt, Parliament/George Clinton, Prince), and Ruperto Ifil (The groove Funkster) on drums.

Ellis Paul has toured from Alaska to Miami, playing at on stages from coffeehouses to Carnegie Hall and the Newport Folk Festival to The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He won the prestigious Kerrville New Folk Award and USA Today named him as the "Best Bet for Stardom." His songs have been featured in the recent Jim Carey hit movie, Me, Myself and Irene. "Ellis Paul is now a national folk star and to many the quintessential Boston songwriter: literate, provocative, urbanely romantic." - The Boston Globe. "The secret to Paul's rivetingly honest performing style is that he culls his stage presence and better-song banter from the same authentic place he draws his songs." - Scott Alarik, The Boston Globe

This will be yet another return show for us at the warmest Coffee House in the middle of New Paltz. We'll be featuring the "shakin' and breakin' electric show" with our friends from Massapequa, Long Island: Vision Through Sound. No hiding behind the girls in the upstairs balcony, Topo Gigio -- this ain't Ed Sullivan's Show.

[Now really -- where else in 2008 can you hear TWO bands and get this much live entertainment all for the price of a cup of coffee?!?!]

An all-ages show, and a non-alcoholic environment -- screaming girls included.

And of course, we give a special thank-you to the New Paltz Muddy Cup for featuring our single "When Your Baby's Gone" on their myspace page. ALWAYS a good time at The Muddy Cup.
