The Putnam Chorale, an 80-person community choir, entering its 42nd year, offers experienced and novice singers an opportunity to learn and perform vibrant classic and contemporary choral music. Its music director, Jason C. Tramm, is an award-winning conductor, educator, and artistic director who serves as Director of Choral Activities at Seton Hall University and leads several acclaimed professional orchestras, opera companies, and choruses in New York and New Jersey.

The Putnam Chorale’s fall program, titled “Starry Night”, includes music of extraordinary beauty, and emotional resonance. This program moves from the quiet wonder of Samuel Barber’s “Sure on this Shining Night,” to the sacred mystery of James McMillan’s “O Radiant Dawn,” and Arvo Part’s “Bogoroditse Devo.” The group will also learn to sing in Catalan for Granados’s celestial “Song of the Stars,” and finally turn to the joyful music of American spirituals like “Go Tell it on the Mountain.”

The Chorale will perform its Starry Night program in December 2026 at St. James the Apostle Church in Carmel and at St. Kateri Tekakwitha Church in Lagrangeville.

Singers can participate in rehearsals for free through the month of September, to ensure that the fit is right. If the singer wishes to continue, the semester tuition is $160 and includes all the required music. Rehearsals are held on Monday evenings at the Carmel High School in Casey Hall, from 7pm to 9:30pm.

Auditions are not required, except to place the singer in the appropriate section (Soprano, Alto, Tenor or Bass). Some experience singing with a choir or other musical group previously is preferred.
