During this time he also became interested the instruments of the other band members he worked with and started teaching himself how to play guitar and bass. Later on he picked up banjo and mandolin. During the early 80’s his music took a very different turn. He became a member of the Hudson Valley Folk Guild and began performing at every open mic venue he could find. He continues to haunt the stages in the area and has been a feature on some local radio stations like WVKR and whenever possible plays at some of the local festivals and street fairs. I am sure you will agree that his use of alternate and standard tunings accompanied by his soothing clear voice makes for an enjoyable evening of music.

Saturday 7:30 pm | Sweet Plantain String Quartet Classical/Opera, Latin, and Jazz | Common Ground Coffeehouse 25 Old Jackson Avenue Hastings-on-Hudson, NY See Map |
Sweet Plantain is a string quartet that specializes in genre-blurring, contemporary works by Latin American composers as well as original compositions and arrangements. Its unique style fuses Latin, classical, jazz, and improvisational forms. The group’s mission is to give voice to a contemporary, urban, Latino sound, and so much of the group’s repertoire is rooted in improvisation. The art of improvisation, once an integral part of western classical music, has all but been abandoned in the training and performance of classical artists, although it continues to occupy an important role in nearly every other musical genre. Sweet Plantain therefore works to weave the possibilities of improvisation into classical music by arranging existing pieces and writing original compositions that contain improvised sections. The group also makes use of extended percussive techniques, some of them original creations, to best achieve and showcase the rhythmic vitality characteristic of Latin music. Grammy nominated guitarist, singer and songwriter Bill Kirchen is one of the fortunate few who can step on any stage, play those trademark licks which drove the seminal Commander Cody classic "Hot Rod Lincoln" into the top ten nationwide, and elicit instant recognition for a career that's spanned over 30 years and includes performances with names like Nick Lowe, Emmylou Harris, Doug Sahm, Elvis Costello and Danny Gatton. Named "A Titan of the Telecaster" by Guitar Player Magazine, he celebrates an American musical tradition where country music draws upon its origins in blues and bluegrass, and in the Western swing of Texas and California honky tonks. An apt description of Bill's singing, songwriting and guitar playing skill is provided in this quote from Nick Lowe: "He's like a devastating culmination of the elegant and funky... a really sensational musician, with enormous depth." Thursday 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm | Private Concert with Gail Straub with Bar Scott Acoustic | Holy Cross Monastery West Park, NY See Map |
This concert will be a private one for those taking part in one of Gail Straub's fabulous retreats at the Holy Cross Monastery in West Park, NY. I list it here because any time I get to sing in a chapel, church, cathedral, synagogue, stone venue of any kind that is designed specifically for the human voice, I am a happy camper. This chapel is one of my favorites and I am delighted to have been asked to sing there again. And for those of you who don't know Gail and would like to do workshops on leadership and personal empowerment, google her and find out what she's up to. Remarkable woman! | ||
