I love the Rosendale Cafe; they present world-class musicians and it's one of the few places I can go where I can order most anything they have on their menu!

What this is. Lifted from their site: "The Rosendale Cafe has been bringing notable performances to the area for 16 years. This more humble opportunity for local performances started with a very successful run of the Community Music Night, and the series has run on and off since fall 2007.

"The showcase has been a performance opportunity for both newly-established artists, and those that were outside the musical style of the Cafe's usual weekend bookings."

Etienne Charles' Quartet, James Shipp (percussion and vibraphone), Ben Williams (bass), John Davis (drums)
Jazz
BeanRunner Cafe
201 S. Division Street @ Esther
Peekskill, NY   See Map
Born in Trinidad, Etienne Charles' music is distinctly influenced by the sounds of calypso, steel pan, and African Shango drumming.

A critically acclaimed trumpeter, Charles plays a jazz griot, reflecting sounds of the past and sounds of place. Mixing jazz with Afro-Cuban and calypso styles, Charles' sophomore album, Folklore, illustrates the crossroads culture of the Caribbean. Folklore tells of the folk characters in his native Trinidad through the 26-year-old's wholly original compositions. According to legend, Douens are the lost souls of young children (they can be seen in the forest with their floppy hats, featureless faces and backwards feet). "Mama D'lo" (Mother of the Water) reflects a Caribbean take on the mermaid as protector of the sea. On Folklore, Charles brings those stories to life with a skill that won him the 2006 National Trumpet Competition.

Another "Raising the Bar" Production by Earl John Powell.

The cool breezes of Maine's northlands have flowed through the songs of folk legend David Mallett for more than four decades. The loss of American towns and rural landscapes is the subject of many of his songs, as are the issues of wilderness preservation and the struggle of the common man. Mallett's music has been performed by Arlo Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Emmylou Harris, Kathy Mattea, John Denver and even the Muppets. His latest CD features his music set to the words of Henry David Thoreau.
