SlideAttack is a modern incarnation of the group led by the great J.J. Johnson and Kai Winding, co-led by two NY veteran trombonists, Alan Goidel and Howard Levy. SlideAttack plays fresh arrangements of jazz standards from the swing era to hard bop and beyond, by composers Kenny Dorham, J.J. Johnson, George Gershwin, Hank Mobley and others, along with original material.

"In so many ways, this music is so refreshing; excellent arrangements, interesting repertoire, all put together with the care and love that can only come from true dedication and appreciation for the kind of swinging jazz that one doesn't hear nearly enough nowadays. In the great tradition of the two-trombone groups of yesteryear, Mr. Levy and Mr. Goidel deserve our gratitude for keeping the tradition not only alive, but swinging!" - Loren Schoenberg, Artistic Director, The National Jazz Museum in Harlem

An Evening of Folk Revival
with Jim Kweskin, David Kraai
Folk/Traditional, Blues, and Jazz
Unison Arts & Learning Center
68 Mountain Rest Road
New Paltz, NY   See Map
Jim Kweskin is probably best known as a singer and bandleader. He also created one of the bedrock guitar styles of the folk revival, adapting the ragtime-blues fingerpicking of artists like Blind Boy Fuller to the more complex chords of pop and jazz. He has maintained a remarkably consistent musical vision since his jug band days, continuing to explore traditional folk and blues with the sophisticated sensibility of a jazz musician and jazz with the communal simplicity of a folk artist. He has recorded solo ventures, as a member of the U and I band, and with U and I bandmate Samoa Wilson, and continues to perform widely in various formats. In recent years he and Geoff Muldaur have often appeared as a duo, revisiting and expanding on their Jug Band repertoire. Opening up for Jim is Hudson Valley native & singer songwriter, David Kraai

Stellar Songwriting, Stellar Singing
with Marc Von Em, feat. Jeff Miller on keys, and Scott Harper on sax
Acoustic, Singer-Songwriter
12 Grapes Music & Wine Bar
12 North Division Street
Peekskill, NY   See Map
Marc's original music is influenced by folk, funk & blues. As one reviewer wrote: "If you haven't seen Marc Von Em perform live, you're only cheating yourself."

Marc is able to create amazing amounts of sound and diversity through his voice and one faithful guitar. His chops are wide-ranging, from delicate finger picking to rambunctious Pete Townsend-type strumming. Marc is able to seamlessly switch his vibe -- his dynamic voice can go from smooth & soaring to smoky scatting. His harmonica playing is equally impressive and he sometimes uses it to accompany Muddy Waters-style blues on guitar.

Marc has toured with The Rob Thomas Band -- including a tour with the famed '90s band, Counting Crows. Rob once wrote, "... when I heard his original stuff, I asked [Marc] to open up a 10,000 seat gig. Just him, his guitar, and his songs. He killed it!"

Marc is joined tonight by Jeff Miller on keys and Scott Harper on sax. Gonna be fun!

When he tilts away from jazz as we know it, it’s toward big-gesture pop: a sweeping, earnest and melancholic music." -The New York Times

Aaron Parks & Little Big can be seen as a commitment to melodic songwriting, modern rhythms, and immersive storytelling. The genre-fluid ensemble brings their experiences from jazz and improvised music, electronica, R&B, indie pop, alt-country, and much more!

Forward-thinking jazz pianist, Aaron Parks, came to the public's attention during his time with trumpeter Terence Blanchard, and certainly with his work on Blanchard's Grammy-winning opus A Tale of God's Will (2007 - A Requiem for Katrina).

Parks has performed with trumpeter Christian Scott, drummer Kendrick Scott, and vocalist Gretchen Parlato, among others. He has released several albums under his own name, including his 2008 Blue Note debut, Invisible Cinema.

Find the Way (2017), his sophomore release for ECM, featured bassist Ben Street and drummer Billy Hart.

Hootenanny Cafe Mini Concerts
Online: www.wtbq.com or 93.5FM, NY   See Map
With elements of Americana, folk, country, and blues, Kirsten Manville creates songs that feel like they may have come straight from journal entries. Deceptively simple lyrics paint pictures, tell stories, and evoke a range of emotions. Her warm and sultry voice draws the listener in, infusing the songs with feeling and depth. Some People Sing, her latest CD, was a Top 5 album pick in the January 2018 issue of Metronome Magazine, and Kirsten was featured on the cover of the magazine in March 2018. The song “...but Down” was included in the Alternate Root Magazine's weekly top 10 in November 2017. Kirsten's songs have received radio airplay on a number stations both in the United States and overseas. She was a finalist in the songwriting competition at the 2013 Ossipee Valley Music Festival, and in February 2016 she was a winner in the Maine Songwriters Whittlesey Barn Songwriting/Performance Contest. Kirsten is also an accomplished flutist. She performs regularly in the north east.
